It's almost lawn watering time :(

I hate to water the lawn. There was a sprinkler system here when I moved in, but it had so many problems that after spending too much money and time on it, I gave up. I now use a hose and discovered a cheap system of several short hoses and sprinkler heads that cover a larger area without waste. That works for me, but I still hate to do it. Not just the watering, but paying the bill. I have noticed that my water bill is less now that I don't use the sprinkler system, though.

Do you have a sprinkler system? (Dollar Stretcher ran an article about maintaining one - that's what started this!)

My back yard is always greener and grows faster than my front yard, even though it's the same kind of grass. I don't water the back as often and I tend to ignore it when it comes to things like aeration and weed control. I think a perfect green lawn is overrated, but that's just my opinion. In some areas I know watering the lawn is a bigger concern than others because of rainfall.

Anyway... the point to all this rambling is: What do you do to save water on the lawn and garden?

Spring and early summer are rainy seasons here. It doesn't get dry until late summer really and then we only get a short break before hurrcane season begins which usually means another rain season.

I don't recall my parents watering the lawn.  Garden and flower beds and fruit trees, yes.  But lawn, no.  I don't own a house (yet), but I'm not sure if I will or will not water the lawn.

For my garden, we have 14-16 soaker hoses for 14-16 rows. They are all hooked the top to a pvc header, each with their own shut off valve. There are 2 sets of pvc headers, connected by a valve. this way we shut off one side of the garden and run water to the other side overnight. then the next night we switch sides. This doesn't put as much of a strain on our well pump as a sprinkler....and you are only watering the plants and not a bunch of space, like a sprinkler does.

Well, yeah! Try growing some edible ornamental crops out there....like flowering kale or rainbow swiss chard.

My kitchen door opens to our side yard..in front of the backyard fence so it's open to view. I have several planters around the side porch with onions, radish and parsley planted.

It would take an awful lot of ornamental crops to cover my front lawn and it's not that big. LOL

I have thought about digging it up and putting in buffalo grass or something that doesn't grow tall and doesn't need to be watered, but that would take a ton of money and work to do.
