On the right side of my tiny front porch & steps was an enormous arborvitae bush. It was taking over half the area of the porch & steps. The original owner planted one of these on either side of the front bay window, & they are just too large for the spot. Neither my husband nor I particularly like these bushes to start with, but they are already planted & look ok, except that they are too large..
Last night I googled these bushes & found that they can be severely pruned back, & it is best done in late fall. DH & I discussed our options. Tonight it is supposed to snow. So today I cut back the bush by the stairs to one half its side. The garbage can is full of the prunings, so I will not prune back the other bush until after the garbage can is empty, so I don't have to pay extra to take the prunings to the dump.
If the bushes survive, they will be a more appropriate size. If not, then I will remove them & plant dwarf burning bushes, which I know can be severely pruned to maintain the desired size. We both like the deep red color the burning bush leaves turn in fall. On the other hand, if the green arborvitae bushes can be maintained at a smaller size, they will look nice again & cost nothing.
