I did disposable diaper the first two and could only use certain brands due to allergies and that didn't prevent rashes, just lessened them so I had the cost of diaper rash treatments as well. My third was even more allergic than the first two and I used cloth diapers and wipes for her at less cost than I would have spent on disposables and rash treatments.

Re: Cloth diapering?

less then 20 a month on disposables and wipes, because at the time, i could get those huge boxes for about 13 then a huge package of wipes for about 5.......so 18? for disposable diapers and then i spent 18 a month for pullups total would have been

18 x 18 =324 for andrews diapers and wipes

18 x18 =324 for dakotas wipes and diapers

9x2=18 monthly pullups for 6 months (18x6=108) (at the time dakota was just starting, so a pake of pullups, would last 2 weeks) wipes at this point, were still 5 for a big pack, but lasted 2 months (5x6=30)

then for 6 months, one package of pullups lasted a month so 9x 6=54

total cost for andrew 324 for 18 months (including diapers and wipes, i had a washer and dryer when potty training, but not while he was a baby)

total cost for dakota 462 (including diapers, wipes, and pullups while dakota was potty training, i was paying to do my laundry)

total cost for both kids 786.......andrew was potty trained fully by the time he was 2 and ahalf ( lots of laundry got washed for a year ), dakota was fully potty trained at 2 and half, minus the occasional accident at night (when she turned 3 she stoppedhaving accidents while sleeping)

Re: Cloth diapering?

I used both cloth and disposable. I also bought about 3 kinds of cloth diapers and have my favorites.

Fuzzi Buns (I see now they have lots of colors). I loved the nylon outer shell with the adjustable snaps and the soft fleece lining. It's a "pocket" diaper so you need an insert to absorb moisture. I loved hemp inserts and bought a dozen on ebay. Hemparoos, I think they were called. But since regular chinese prefolds were cheap, I used those often for inserts.

I also had some Kushies, with built in covers and without covers, from ebay. Velcro tabs were nice. Didn't need inserts unless you wanted more absorbency. But Kushies leaked quite a bit with DS#1. DS#2 couldn't fit into the newborn size b/c he was 10 pounds at birth!

I also had some home-made (not by me, lol) cloth diaper covers made from fleece. I used a prefold cloth diaper or 2 inside and then the fleece cover. I didn't like these very much as they leaked the most and my ds could't wear pants (wouldn't fit over his large diaper, cover, etc) and it was too cold in November to let him be without pants or jammies.

When my ds 1&2 started daycare, I had to use disposable at daycare. Cloth at home until they outgrew my several systems. DS#1 is potty trained (yea!). DS #2 is 13 months and uses a mixture of cloth and disposable. But getting too large for my cloth diapers.

Washing: I didn't soak. I had a pail with a lid and dumped poo in the toilet. The rest went in the pail. Sprinkled baking soda on top for odor control. When pail was full, dumped load into washer. First wash: no detergent, cold wash and rinse. Second wash, warm or hot water, 1/4 amount of detergent, vinegar rinse. Tried to line-dry outside or inside but sometimes, I needed the diapers and machined dried, NO fabric softener.

Re: Cloth diapering?

I used Motherease cloth diapers with my son. I loved them. They had adjustable snaps so they went from about 10lbs to 30+lbs. I don't know if they still make them, sure they do I think the website is motherease.com

and i didnt have a washer and dryer, so itcost 10 a week for clean clothes as it was, had i added in cloth diapers, it would have been 20 a week instead, (80 is lot more then 40) and for wipes and dipaers it only cost 15 a month, so in my case, i saved 35 a month, by using disposables. when i was potty training andrew i had a washer and dryer so he went from diapers to those thick cloth undies to regular undies.......with dakota i again used disposables but when i was potty training her, i didnt have a washer and dryer so she wore pull ups, which was 9 and would last about 2 weeks......so washing laundry adn diapers in my case, made it more expensive then it was to use disposables

Re: Cloth diapering?

Funny, I read this today and just last night I won an ebay auction for a 6 pack of snappis!
