If you are planning on ordering the box are you going to cook it for Thanksgiving or divide the box up and spread it out for several meals? I am planning on ordering the box myself. I think I will only order one but I also might change my mind and order two. I will cook it for Thanksgiving meal unless I go to my in laws instead. It looks like a good spread of food. Maybe what my grandmother would cook. Except we have a chicken instead of the turkey. what is every one thought on this holiday box.

Angel food produce boxes?

Besides the Servant magazine being reduced to a single sheet of paper, I noted that the produce boxes themselves have also changed. Here it is only the fifth. Yes it is a little early. I am not complaining. Only two meats are process they are fish sticks and chicken tenders. Both my family likes. Also there is a pork roast and we haven't seen one for a while. The ham steaks are back also. For that I am happy. This time the steaks (New York Strip) are four for eight ounces. More even for the family.

November Angel Food Dessert?

I am in the second week of Angel Food delivery, can those who DO get their AF this weekend, please report in their dessert and general comments on the orders-any substitutions? quality issues?

I'm looking for questions to ask users here in CO.

one topic that came up with the spokeswoman was the ethics of using programs people view as "for the poor."

is it OK to use these buying clubs (that's how the local folk view them) if you can afford the markets? why or why not (i'd like to get some basic ideas of the viewpoints)?

Are the boxes weighted toward processed foods in your opinion? Are they healthy long term?

How long is the box's food meant to last?

As a vegetarian, I've not found them appealing.

and what's the sweet deal with these programs?

Sorry to mine you dear folks, but if anyone knows this, it is YOU!

I thank you in advance.

The signature box looks good: 2 lb NY strip steaks, 1.5 lb boneless pork roast (I am a bit leary on the quality-anyone ever get one of these?), BSCB fajita strips, ground beef, BSCB tenders (YUM), fish sticks, center cut ham, limas beans, green beans, 2 lb fr fries, 2 lb apples, flour tortillas, box milk, eggs, dessert. I'll order 2 of these.

Produce looks good: sweet potatoes, white potatoes, onions, cabbage, carrots, celery, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, mango, avocado, kiwi. I'll get at least 1.

There is also a holiday fruit special (seems a bit high, I have to compare local prices): graprfruit, navel oranges, tgangerines, Rome apples, golden delicious apples, red delicious, granny smiths, gala apples, anhou pears, Sunkist gem candies. That's available for $26.

The meat boxes aren't of interest to me, and the Holiday sausage and cheese box is very expensive, IMO.

I am trying to figure out if I should start buying an extra box of food from AF when they are good boxes or should I depend on sales (which is not usually good) and aldis. Or do a mix of both.
I wondered if the quality of their meat has improved as well? In the past the bags of chicken "nuggets" often held nuggets heavily breaded and mostly the size of the tip of my little finger, the rib eye steaks were preserved with ricin (sp?) and didn't chew like natural meat, and the pork chops were the trash "end cuts" you can get for 99 cents a pound in the grocery store. Dh really likes his meat and got tired of the low quality meats. The kids didn't care that the nuggets were almost all breading and so small, but I did.

So . . . be honest. How's the meat these days? I'm really trying to decide if I want to get started with Angel Food again or not.

September Angel Food Menu

Hope it's ok that I start this - don't want to trample any toes. But, I just noticed, the September Angel Food Menu is up. I'm pretty thrilled by it - looks great. I might order 2 boxes this month.

You can find it here.

Recipes for Sept '09 Angel Food box

Here's a family favorite:

1/3 cup raw rice

4 cups coarsely shredded cabbage

Place the cabbage in the bottom of a large, Pam sprayed casserole dish *(that has a cover) Brown the beef along with the onion, rice. Season w/ salt and pepper. Top the cabbage layer with the meat mixture. Mix the 2 cans of soup w/ one can of water, basil. Pour evenly over the top. Cover and bake @ 350 for one hour. Tastes just like Golombki's without all of the work, and is even BETTER the next day, assuming that you have any leftover.

Enjoy!

I ended up with a stack of these things in the freezer and started baking them for homemade corn chip type snacks.

Tonight my husband suggested trying them for taco shells.

I laid them flat on a pan and baked them until crisp. I broke them into pieces and lined each bowl with them. I used the taco filling recipe from Hillbilly Housewife and then added another layer of the tortilla pieces on top then sprinkled with cheese. This was delicious and was a little different than the usual tacos.

This is a keeper recipe for us. Now I hope Angel Food gives us more of the corn tortillas in the future.

I have checked the Angel Foods website and up until last month the nearest one was 2 hours away. The share rep seemed to be trying to steer people away from it. Called it a fly by night place, but from reading about it on here I knew that was not true.

I have been ordering 2 signature and 2 produce boxes each month. I was thrilled with the salad ingredients in August, and disappointed that Sept really didn't have any, unless you count cabbage for coleslaw. For those of you who have more experience with AF, what is the produce box typically like come Winter? I am in CT and our gardens were a disaster this year, and with the end of Sept, comes the end of most gardens and sharp increases in fresh produce, one of the reasons we turned to AF. We only have potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, various varieties of beans left. I have noted that the produce box has consistantly contained 2 types of potatoes, onions, cabbage, carrots each month. Those tend to be the cheaper choices, which is fine, as we use them as stapes here. I'd appreciate your sharing your thoughts. THanks in advance!

August Angel Food Menu

I Just notice that August menu is up. There is no latin veg and fruit box. There is know an allergen free dry mix products. This is the first time that I have seen frozen lima beans, fish sticks, head of lettuce, and sweat potatoes in the signature box.

Great Food for All (food program)

Just wanted to let you all know about a food program. A church in Ohio that used to be an Angel Food Ministries host site will now do a program called Great Food for All. The website is: http://www.greatfoodforall.com/Export1.htm. The cost is the same as Angel Food, but there seems to be more variety -- as in there is fish. (Yippee!) One nice thing, also, is that the food is pre-packed into a single box, so no counting out items, storage of boxes, etc.

I also like the way they say "If you eat, you qualify." :-)

I do not know how extensive this program is at this point. But, with Dollar Stretchers all around the country, if it is local, it will find itself expanding.

Go to the website and see how they do it -- no buildings, no mortgages, etc.

food share America thanksgiving boxes

They Just put it up on there website www.sharecolorado.com Looks GREAT!!
(Edited: Sorry, I had to delete the web page because of copyrights.
