Will Angel Food or Other Programs Save You Money?

So there is an Angel Food distribution center near you and you are ready to start saving with an order!

Wait! Before you get excited about any food program or co-op, look the foods over carefully to be sure you will use most of them. Wasted food is not much of a savings. While many across America are lowering their grocery bills by using Angel Food, SHARE and other programs, it does not mean you absolutely will save as well. Make sure you will spend less.

Bring your Angel Food menu list to the grocery store to get a real price check on what these items would cost there. The prices that these programs charge are based on what they spend and on averages. Some areas have fantastically low food prices or great resources for cheaper food and you may be one fortunate enough to live in such an area.

Use those numbers to be sure you still save if there are items in the boxes that you will routinely not use. Be sure to find a source you can pass those items to like a food pantry or a friend.

Don't forget the stay out of stores and spend less trick. Some people find this kind of system works and saves them money overall even if they could find like products for less than Angel Food charges for a box. There is no impulse shopping to add to the total spent when you arrive at your distribution center as you have preordered and are only picking up the boxes.

The convenience of ordering a large amount of food and having a quick pick up once a month may actually be worth money to some people. The best savings on foods bought in the stores often comes with price matching, coupon clipping and shopping in a variety of stores. Some folks on the go don't have this kind of time and struggle to fit in weekly dashes into a local grocery store. Angel Food is a cheaper option than other sources of foods that can be ordered.

If your nearest distribution is not near your home, estimate the cost of fuel for pick ups and compare what you spend on trips to the grocery store. These costs are a deciding factor for many when they look at the figures in black and white.

If you don't believe Angel Food, SHARE or the program you are considering will save you money then you likely are getting very good deals. Please check our general food forum and our shopping forum for discussions on coupons, great deals and other savings tips.

If you believe you will save money using the program then it's time to get excited! It's also time to move to the next step and begin planning your order.

I am one of those that love angel food. I look over the menu close and figure if we will use every thing and if it is cheap through them or not. In Feb. it will be three years since I been using angel food. I only miss ordering two months, because I thought it wasn't worth those months. So I am getting back with it. And the only food I have to get is milk, bread, and breakfast food. I do recommend angel food for people to at least try. It might take a few months to see the savings.

I am one of the participants who saves quite a bit.

I was living in Mississippi when I first began using Angel Food, I skipped some months and used it to supplement the purchases I made at local stores, On average I was able to spend about $200 a month on foods and supplies using Angel Food and buying items on sale. When we moved to Louisiana in March, my expense gradually shot up to $700 a month. In November my husband and I decided to get our expense lower and we made an order for Angel Food, In December, the first month of using AF, we spent $300 less.

I save even if we don't personally use all the items. I also can relate to the saving by staying out of stores strategy and the inconvenience factor.

As a non-driver, I rely on my husband for transportation. His schedule dictates our shopping schedule. There have been times when I have only had time to make one stop and rush in and out. The savings I make on some items this way only cancels out some of the price of items I need that are rather high at the same store. With two of us adding just a few things to the cart, we end up with more than intended.

My employer gave everyone a regular box for a Christmas present.  I really enjoyed the variety. I ordered  a regular one and a fruit/veg box  for this month and am looking forward to getting it!  I think it helps to keep a proper perspective on portion sizes as well.  Do I need to bring my own box?  I asked when I ordered it and the lady in the office was not sure.  They just started this in my area a couple months ago.

My local distribution site asks that participants bring in their own boxes or ice chests to be filled. The site I formerly had boxes pre-packed and ready to be carried out. Participants were asked to bring one box in for every food box ordered to be given to the site for use in the next month.

I have never ordered angel food. There is one in the next town so it's a little drive up. The reason I don't order is I really don't like the food they have. Just about every month they offer things like chicken nuggets or chicken patties. My family doesn't eat things like this. Do to the fact that I can't read the ingredients in the already prepared foods I have to pass on the deals.

Isn't it great how we can save money with it. Right know I am using it and deep sales on meat. If it wasn't for the deep sale price on the meat I would use mostly angel food.

I have passed some of those foods on as we don't care to eat too much of that.

I agree.  There are too many things in the boxes that I wouldn't eat, so I've never ordered one.
