    Hostess Gift Suggestions. Please

I have suddenly realized that I need to start keeping hostess gifts in case I am invited somewhere.

Could you please help me with some nice suggestions that won't break my budget? I don't wish to appear cheap, but I certainly don't want to spend a bunch either. Where should I look for these items?

I don't play bridge, but Mom did. Whenever we traveled she'd look for decks of playing cards and bridge tally pads that were attractive.

Unfortunately, West Point Pepperel is closed in Williamsburg. They used to have attractive guest towels for powder rooms. Alas, the Williamsburg Soap and Candle Factory has closed; it had nice guest soaps.

    Many thanks.

If i know my hostess or other people attending a gathering drink i will tend to bring wine or beer (not Budweiser... but craft beers).

Other good gifts...  cookies in a nice tin or box, a nice candle (There is the Yankee outlet in WIlliamsburg), hand towels would be great (also think of the Pottery in Williamsburg for deals on that), flowers in a nice vase (you could always purchase great vases ahead of time and stop by the grocery store for fresh flowers on the way to your gathering for the flowers).

Nicole hit the nail on the head.  I'd add nice chocolates (you can probably get Lindt truffles and Ferro Rocher on clearance now that its after the holidays).

Lindt chocolates and Ferro Rochers are good ANYtime in my book!   :)

Maybe i'll have to host a party and invite you Ariana, if that is what you bring as a hostess gift!

     Great thinking there.

Lindt truffles wouldn't work for me to give as a hostess gift. They wouldn't make it from my house to the gathering! Devil

In Japan, where hostess gifts are a big deal, guests are encouraged to bring something that represents their region or city (even to other locals). Consequently, in the prefecture known for their apple orchards, every little shop has lots of apple-themed gifts in decorative boxes specifically intended to be hostess gifts - apple candies of all kinds, apple jellies, apple crates. Is there something that would work as a hostess gift that represents VA or Williamsburg?

Another idea - if you can find a deal on elegant glasses, then you could buy a set and bring one or two to the gathering filled with chocolates and wrapped with a ribbon. I still have a stunning cobalt blue thick-walled tumbler I was given full of pencils years and years ago. It technically has a flaw in the lip from being hand-blown, but I actually love that flaw because it proves it was hand-blown!

I think it depends what you are invited too and the season.    dinner parties etc I bring flowers or a nice potted mum etc or wine.      I found very nice imported soaps at winners from italy.  4 soaps in nice boxes so I bought about 6-7 different types for gifts on hand and for teachers.

nice tins of cookies or candies are always nice. or tea/coffee sets.

I suggest: candles, chocolate or other candy, notecards or stationary, a bottle of sparkling grape juice (Welch's--only $2.50/bottle and so delicious!), a church or community cookbook, photo frames, refrigerator magnets, baked goods, cheese ball and crackers, jigsaw puzzles...and I agree with everything everyone else suggested!
