We still have $1200 on our last credit card. I have not received our rebate check (we filed our return on April 15 and the irs.gov says that it could be an additional six weeks past the dates given for mailing out paper checks, ugh). Once we get our rebate check of $1800, that debt will be gone. Our highest credit card debt was $6800 in December of 2007 and we have paid it down to $1200 since January by (1) stopping the use of credit cards--physically taking them out of our wallets; (2) taking any savings from living frugually and following a budget and paying it right toward our debt. We were able to increase our $300 a month credit card payments to $600 or $800 even one month. Applying a Christmas gift of $500 to debt rather than buying something with it also helped.
I understand about the fear of needing to use a cc when an unexpected expense comes along--like a cell phone bill or vet bill, etc. We have tried to build up our emergency savings account so when we get an unexpected exepense (like needing to buy a wet/dry vac to clean up water in the basement after our storms recently), we can pull $150 cash out of the account and buy it. Our savings is not huge yet (has $500 right now), but in the past, we would have put the shop vac on a credit card as we would not have had cash.
