Pat, your list is pretty impressive.  I wish I knew people to teach me some of these skills!  I am going to start being more proactive in learning new skills.   I think a yarn shop around here has classes and I am going to sign myself up for some.   My skills:

    1.    I do know how to quilt and sew by hand.

    2.    I can wash and dry clothes.

frugalgal, if there's something in particular you want to learn, just ask! You do know people to teach you! There are enough experts here on different topics, that someone will know how to do almost anything you ask about and I'm sure any one of us would be happy to share. Were you interested in crocheting or knitting classes? I can't crochet worth anything, but I've knitted since I was a young teenager.

Haven't done #3,7,12, 13    does drilling a well count,  I found the very best guy to drill a well for us. We have the best tasting water.   I have the plans to make a solar oven.  I have a wash tub if I ever need to wash clothes my hand.  I've also made hand dipped candles and have the supplies to make more.

I never found doing chickens hard, but my husband does so we don't do them any more.

I'm 63 and we have been practicing farm and homsteading things for over 25 years now.  I love country living.

Lord, I wouldn't survive long! I can wash and dry clothes and crochet a blanket/scarf etc but that is about it. I did make jam for fun years ago.  The kids hardly eat jam so its not worth making for me now. I have grown small veggie gardens etc. The only things I have killed are the poor mice or birds that had to be put out of their misery when the cat was finished with them as a teenager.  I can mend and sew simple things. I just don't have much of a need because I can buy clothes cheaper then sewing them. I want to learn to quilt but have to improve my skills. I bought beautiful expensive material I don't want to ruin.  One of the things I need to wait on until the kids are older. I have the Amy's tightwad books which has solar ovens in it.   I plan on putting my daughter in girl guides so maybe I will learn how to build a fire along with her!

I have not done #2,4,7,8,10,11,13. On # 6 I have help butcher both chickens and wild food, my DH is both a hunter and a fisher so I've been well trained in those areas.  My DH has not done #2,4,7,8,10,12, & 13.  I just told my husband yesterday that I knew what I wanted for my birthday this year, a NEW wash tub!! He of course said "no problem" and I knew that I could share that here and y'all would NOT think I was crazy.LOL.  I think I'll keep a copy of this list and work on the things that we don't know how to yet do and add some to it that we would like to learn how to do.  Thanks Pat, this is a great thread.

Re: What skills do you have?

    Lets see,, I can do #'s 1 - 5, #8 & 9 n #12 if I have to.

We like to fish, but we are catch n release, Im not much of a fish eater. Dh likes to hunt, but hasnt in several yrs, never brought anything home to cook. So he's stopped hunting.

DH has dug a well, I was to young to help when my dad did it by hand.

i too have a tredle sewing machine that belonged to my Dh's great grandmother, it still works and Ive used it.

I taught myself to crochet, would like to learn to knit so i can make dh some wool socks.

Ive also made homemade gifts to give when we were having a money crunch when Dh lost his job back in 2002. I find that handmade gifts are the best kind to give n get.

yes Ive done laundry by hand, love hanging it up in the sun to dry. smells so good afterwards.

Dont have much in the way of ground to grow stuff to can, but Ive done it.

Re: What skills do you have?

It looks to me like we're all up to learning more! Reply to many posts:

capitalj, I don't know about drilling a well, but if you have one you can get water from during an emergency when electricity is cut off, then that has to qualify.

Gigi, I was thinking of any sort of scene where we would have to fall back on our own skills. Anything from a severe depression or personal financial failure to natural disaster or a political or economic meltdown, so that covers a lot of territory.

My Family's Interest, beginning to learn what we don't know is what it's all about. I don't think any one of us can do it all (yet), but we can learn!

Shellia, do you realize what a gem of a husband you have there? A lot of guys, faced with the prospect of finding a new washtub would probably just get you a dozen roses instead, figuring you really didn't mean it!

Sile, it looks like you're well on your way. Have you ever tried container gardening? I was surprised at how much I could grow that way.

Re: What skills do you have?

We do grow tomatoes, sometimes a pumpkin (havent done that for a few yrs), once time we did grow lettuce (was eating in Feb during a nice warm winter), n next yr besides the tomatoes I want to grow cucumbers again. Other than that, I have my tiny little herb garden (mostly catnip for the cats), but their are a few others herbs.

Cant do much with this rocky ground, we rent a trailer lot, hard to get grass to even grow  lol.
