Yep, we use them too.  I love the new ones that look like regular bulbs-perfect for the spotlight style fixtures we have in the hallways and kitchen.  Plus just recently, I found one that dims (perfect for two fixtures we have with dimmer features!).  We are gradually converting as the regular bulbs burn out.  It's taking awhile as some of these bulbs don't burn out very much!

We too live in CA and are fortunate to take advantage of the subsidy and purchase them fairly inexpensively.  At least, the regular ones are well priced.  Unfortunately, the spotlights are not as affordable but worth the investment as regular spotlight bulbs are expensive anyway and they burn a lot of energy.  The CFL spotlights will last for a LONG time and the cost of using them will be significantly less (I read once that regular spotlights cost .25/hour to have on . . . we have a bunch of those lights!!)

Re: Do You Use CFLS in Your Home?

I finally bought my first set of CFLs today... I'd been hesitating because they cost so much compared to regular bulbs, but after hearing so many success stories about lowering power bills with them I decided to start switching!

Here's a question- if my bulbs say they give 100 watts of light but only actually use 23 watts, can I put them into sockets that are rated only for 60 watts or lower? I think I probably can, since they're using under 60 watts, but I want to be sure...

I've been replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs as the incandescents burn out.  One nice thing I've noticed is that, unlike incandescent bulbs, CFLs don't burn out as quickly when it's cold, and I've been using CFLs in my outdoor lights for years - they last a lot longer and don't react as much to temperature changes.

We have a number of them at home, but I'm rather disappointed in the first ones we bought a couple of years ago ... three of them have given out -- two of them since March. The company's already replaced one, and promised to replace the other (which poofed right after the guarantee ended.) I'll have to see if they're willing to do anything about the third on a good faith basis. (we followed all the rules .. they weren't outside or hooked up to timers...)
