One thing we can do is to try and educate others about disability.

I belong to the Vt. Center For Independent Living. Everyone there, almost,. has significant physical disability. I plan to give a seminar on psychiatric disability to try and create some understanding about how difficult it can make our lives.

I remember being at one meeting when some of the members, not knowing I had psychiatric disability as well as physical, were actually mocking psychiatric disability, saying it was take, and swearing they would never take "those pills for crazy people." They are in now way unkind people, but they are insensitive to the "invisible" disabilities.

I hope I can help bridge the gap between us.

I agree with you in theory, but it gets very tiring trying to educate people, especially about "invisible" disabilities.  Really, the only people you SHOULD have to explain to are friends, family, and doctors.  I'd love to see a resurgence of good manners where people don't try to....attack, or explain, or otherwise make more difficult a disabled person's life.   Really, if my doctor tells me it is the way it is, why isn't that good enough for everyone else?

Good point, Kate.  Except for the children and the ignorant comments that would work in the logical sense of the word.  But ...  those of us who live with disability, we all know that is not reality.

Hi kateC. I agree with what you said the why in the education part hmmm that if people qould listen we talk until we are blue in the face for the so called normal people since a hidden dissabilty is nothing that they are lazy ahhhh! my openion on them is go wat thier own shorts or words the hidden part of dissabi;ty which I do have it is a different form of dislexia you know when some people see letter backwards for them its hard me its alittle different the dr. said I block out then number and letters runn into each other make it hard for me during a test then the black out happens and then numbers and the letters so on so fourth but trying to educate people Im talking to the brick wall with them its the so called normal persons problem I have enough on my hands thats how some think not all but like I said I agree with the e-mail you wtote...

    have a blessed day
