I like spinach... that would probably be good.

Re: Storing (and finding) Plastic Containers

I have lots of plastic containers and very little cabinet space to keep them.  What I did may sound a little un-frugal, but I bought two sets of square containers with lids and I keep that up at eye level with my dishes and it makes them sooooo easy to access and store.  I keep them nested and put the lids on top.

Now the other containers are a little "messier", at least right now.  I have an odd-sized plastic container and that keeps my lids, generally.  I need to organize this cabinet about every two months or so or it gets out of hand as I keep more than just my plastic containers.  Also, I get small margarine tubs and use them for everything from leftovers to paint (I throw them away after painting obviously).  I like the idea of using the lids to go under sticky or messy bottles.  I'll have to try that.

A little off-topic, but something I did with one of my tiniest canning jars is this:  I cut out an old spout from a salt container to fit the top of the jar and screwed the lid over top of that.  In this container, I make a ranch mix and use this to make ranch dip or dressing.  It's lasted several years now.

For those of you who re-use margarine/yogurt tubs and similar plastic tubs - what system do you use so you know what you currently have stored in it? I remember going to my college roommate's house for the holidays, and spending what seemed like 10 minutes in front of the fridge going through margarine tubs looking for the margarine!

I tear off pieces from a huge roll of masking tape, put it on the lid and write the contents with a marker. I use this method for the freezer as well.

This only 'sorta' fits here, but I found a frugal re-use today!  I buy those candle jars, usually at yard sales for a quarter or so.  I burn them down, but only sometimes am able to find a use for the (sometimes smelly) jar.  I discovered quite by accident today that the plastic liner that fits under the jar's lid perfectly fits a can.  I only leave leftover veggies, etc. in the can a day or two in the fridge as it can take on a 'tinny' taste, and I generally put a baggie over it 'til I found this custom fit cover!  So don't throw out your candle jars 'til you've given this a try...Liz

I don't buy a lot of things in plastic containers, so my dad saves all of theirs for me. I usually keep just a few in the cabinet and the rest in the top of my bedroom closet for when I need extra. I make homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese to give to friends and family or give leftovers in them, so they really come in handy. I go through my plastic every couple weeks or so to keep the mismates under control, but other than that, I've never found a good way to store mine. I'll be interested to read these to find out what others are doing.

I organized my cabinet several yrs ago, and it makes such a difference!  I keep the lids in a clear plastic shoe box (without the lid)... this is a container I already had.  The only lids I don't put in this are for my huge stack of 1-cup Ziploc disposable containers.  These lids stack very nicely right next to the Ziplock containers, so that's where I keep them.  Those are my favorite containers too... 1 cup is the perfect single serving size.  Every night I put any leftovers in these containers and freeze for lunches.   They go from freezer, to microwave, to dishwasher.

Does anyone happen to use glass containers to freeze in? We have lots of thick-walled glass jars and I would like to start using them in the freezer (in particular to freeze milk).

We buy Frito Lay cheese dip for chips, every now and then, more for the lid than for the dip...  a perfect fit for cans!

    Regarding glass jars for freezing:

I tried last night to freeze a jar of brewed coffee. The glass jar was a thick-walled one which come with Planter's peanuts inside. The glass pretty well shattered.

I wonder if I had laid it on its side . . .
