This is an interesting thread, I had never heard of Hetty Green before!

    Re: Why are people rich

    lots of good points here!

Rich is relative too.     What would salary would make you rich in one town or stater, wouldn't in another.    If you live in a town that the average house $150,000. $60,000 a year goes far. If you live in a place that the average house is now $500,000, the same $60,000 doesn't go far.

Also it is what others have pointed out What you think is rich.   For some having a decent house, car, food on table, vacation once a year is rich enough. Others feel if they don't have designer clothes, luxury cars, mansions then they are not rich.

I think it comes down to if you are not happy with yourself inside, it doesn't matter how much money you have because money fix everything.   Buys lots of good things but not everything.

Bellows Falls were Hetty lived for a time is around 20 iles from my home. There are still many stories told about her tightwad ways and how her son died.  One grocery store has a mural with her picture on it....actually it is the Dent store. Guess that would be the right place for her picture.Babs
