What local opportunities do you have?

We live withing walking distance of a river and a fantastic trail. I plan on doing a river study here soon. We will also do a leaf study when the leaves start to change.

We have lots of natural areas and I plan to take more advantage of them for science lessons.

What local areas do you use for learning?

I live in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. One of the most interesting places is the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge (3 miles from my home). There is a hiking trail and driving trail to observe fowl, fish and wildlife. We live directly under the flight of the snow geese when they come back to the swamp. We also have the old Erie Canal waterways that connects two lakes Cayuga and Seneca. They have boat and Kayak tours there. There are several streams, rivers and waterfalls going south toward Ithaca NY.

We are still learning about our area but we plan to make a visit to the zoo after the weather cools. There are a few things closer that we may make use of over time like the alligator ranch and community events.

I live in Mid/Northern VA, so our opportunities are pretty literally endless: Civil war battlefields & related too numerous to count, historic homes & plantations every few miles (and downtown, about every other house), President's homes, all of Washington DC & the Smithsonian, The Library of Congress (we have part of this right in town, the rest is an hour away), historic downtowns that include local museums and the like (there are 5 withing a half hour drive of us), a National Park, several state parks, wildlife preserves, bird preserves... The list goes on. We're doing a bug larvae count in October. We ID, collect, and prepare wild foods and mushrooms (I am putting together my own book, actually).

Honestly, this is one of the reasons we moved here.

ETA: We do not have children or home school, but we believe that no one should ever stop learning. I took my nephew to a lot of these places while he was here, though in a much bigger rush than if he were in school, obviously, since he was just here for a week.

I basically live just outside Vancouver BC Canada.  lots to do!.... tons of nature from coastal to mountains. sports from swimming to skiing. water sports like kayaking boating etc. hiking, camping.   nature parks, wetlands, bog, animal rescues centres of all types,   lots of diverse cultures with festivals, food, stores. wildlife preserves, bird preserves, museums of all types.   historic places. beautiful gardens like Van Dusen, Queen Elizabeth Park, Stanley Park.   Ports.  the list is endless.

If I want to start traveling, old ghost towns from the gold rush, desert type lands, up the alaska hwy, rainforests.  2 hr drive to Whistler.    you can swim in the morning and ski in the afternoon.

of course when you live here you don't take advantage as much as a tourist.  used to living with water on one side and mountains on the other.

I don't have kids. I used to know a waitress who homeschooled her daughter who had had surgery.

Kris took advantage of local tearooms and museums for different courses of study.

I live within driving distance of Fort Monroe where Jefferson Davis was imprisoned. Hampton University has an interesting history. Then there is NASA. The astronauts (spelling?) trained there years ago. There is history to be studied in Yorktown and in Williamsburg as well as Jamestown. There are museums in the area including The Mariner's Museum and the Virginia Living Museum.

Then there are displays at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point. It is a part of the College of William and Mary.

Over in Middlesex County you can see the Tomb of General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC, at Christ Church, which is a very historic Episcopal Church.  There are other famous Virginians who are buried at Christ Church including a former governor who was also a member of  Congress.

If you drive to Richmond, there are all sorts of places to explore for school. Probably one of the most attractive settings of history is Hollywood Cemetary. There are many graves of Confedrate soldiers there. Several former United States Presidents are buried there as well as Jefferson Davis. If you do a Google of Hollywood Cemetary, you will be amazed at the information on the website.
