    Update-Grocery Bags

I was finally able to purchase some bags from Food Lion recently. The Food Lion bags are smaller than the bags from Harris Teeter and Farm Fresh.

So I now have bags from Harris Teeter and from Food Lion. I will probably buy some bags at Trader Joe's if I go there.

Just for info--I finally got my Organic Foods bag that a link here lead me to.

The bag DOES NOT have a hard plastic piece for the bottom and the bag collapses if anything is put in it.  I cut one for mine out of a piece of plastic canvas.  It's not as sturdy as the other bottom liners but it's much better than nothing!

I got my bags so that I could carry my groceries from the car into the house easily. The added perk is that I am not using as many plastic bags whenever I grocery shop.

I have 4 Food Lion bags and I love them.  I've also started tossing in my produce bags to reuse those, too.  In the past two weeks I've only brought home 4 plastic bags and 1 new produce bag.  I can pack quite a bit in those Food Lion bags and I love that it reduces how many times I go to the car and back when unloading, but I have overloaded once or twice and realized that I can only life so much!  The plastic bags are used for meat items b/c I refuse to have anything leak on something else.  EWW!  LOL  I did throw of couple of those in with produce bags so hopefully my plastic bag usage will go down even more.

I ask for my meat purchases to be put in a plastic sack. At Harris Teeter there are plastic sacks at the Meat Dept. I put my 2 whole tenderloins in them on Wednesday. The meats leaked after I got home and were in the fridge inside the plastc sack.

The price of the Farm Fresh bags is close to $2.00 and I won't pay that price.

I got the Organic Foods bag from the link posted here as well, and I'm very happy with it. None of the canvas bags I've been using have plastic inserts in the bottom, although I could easily cut one out of cardboard or plastic. I have about 8 canvas/fabric bags that I use now, and I've stopped getting those looks of dread from the cashiers & baggers at Kroger. LOL You know stores only teach how to bag in plastic or paper!! Big Smile I am hoping to get a few plastic bags this week though, as I'm out of can liners for my bathroom trash cans.

The grocery stores I shop at have put out canvas bags for $1 a piece. None of them have plastic bottoms but I plan to start getting one with each shopping trip so I can use those instead of plastic.

I have a cloth bag I got free at the grand opening of the Ace Hardware up the street - it has a cloth-covered insert (not sure it's plastic or cardboard) for the bottom - it would certainly be easy enough to recycle some old cardboard for bottoms; just cut to size and (if waterproofing is an issue) cover with duct tape or contact paper - which would also make it last longer.

But for the most part, I will keep taking plastic bags as long as they're free, to pick up after the dog with.
