Why pay when I got it for free?

Three weeks ago my cell phone got washed with a load of laundry (by my dad who was trying to "help out," lol).  I put out the word at work, and today a co-worker brought me one of her old cell phones.  I charged it up, popped in my SIM card, and presto, I have a working cell phone.  I don't need bells and whistles, so this phone does the trick for me.

So why, when I get home, does my DH say to me, "Wow, that was really nice of her to give you a phone; when are you going to buy a new one?"

    WHAT?

I'd have to ask the same. I never understood my daughter's need for newer and better phones. It's a PHONE!

~IF~ I would require to get a cell phone in the future, I wouldn't know what to do with it beyond getting cool ring tones and doing simple texts. I'm not one to go and update the look of my phone just because it has more "features" that I would have to learn how to use and not necessarily use anyway.

We (DH and I) wrestle constantly with the whole idea of paying for/upgrading something for absolutely no reason at all.  Take, for example, our computer.  Just until last April, we were working on a dinosaur - a 1998 Gateway.  The stupid thing could not do anything; it just was not made for today's needs.  Soooooooooooooo, we get a new laptop.  Runs great, serves our needs, we're absolutely pleased with it.  Thus, it was a necessary upgrade in technology.

On the other hand...Two years ago I sold my dryer.  It was four years old and had been used a grand total of 50 or fewer hours.  I had not used it at all in over a year, so off it goes to a family who will appreciate it.  Seven months ago when I was on maternity leave, hubby says to me, "Since I will prolly be doing laundry while you are recuperating from surgery, how about we go to Sears and get us a dryer?"  I said, "You mean I just had surgery two days ago (I came home just two days after my c-sect) and you want me to go to Sears and shop for a dryer?"

Mind you, I had just finished washing, ironing, and hanging TWO LOADS by myself when he said this.

I should have named this thread Stupid Things My Husband Says and Does.  Lightning  I think I have been working way too much lately, b/c he and I are starting to get on each other's nerves over little things, like cell phones.  Huh?

We just use a couple of Tracfones, prepaid ones that cost $20 each to buy and $20 each for 60-minute cards every three months. The minutes roll over if not used. Ours don't take pictures, have unusual ringtones or anything else. They're just telephones. Why anyone needs all the bells & whistles I don't understand.

I have been looking for a cheap pay as you go cell phone. and the cheapest I can find is a Petrocanada  gas station plan.  cards last up to 6 mths for $20 and $50 lasts a year before expiring. all the others you have to buy every month or so.  They have a nokia phone for $59.00   Dh cell is paid by work so it is just an added expense for me.   But getting to the point where I need it from time to time with the kids etc.

I see on commercials the phone with the big buttons in the US. would like one of those!

We're fixing to look into pre-paid phones.  I cancelled our second phone as soon as the contract was up in March but we kept the first line "in case".  April had 7 minutes on it.  May had 3.  June will have 10.  It's ridiculous to pay $40 a month for that!  So I will be looking into PrePaid within the next week.
