Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
Finished up the shopping for the week. Good buys included:
From Farm Fresh:
Cantelopes .98$ each (got 2)
Grapes .98$ per pound (got 2 bags at 2 pounds each)
From Kroger:
Gatorade 32oz. .79$ each (bought 12 as my DH drinks one almost every other day for his health problems & this is the cheapest I've ever seen them in my area; bought a lost last week, too)
From Walgreens:
Finest Natural Vitamins (Vitamin D for my DH) BOGO so only $7 for two bottles
This should take care of most of the non-grocery stuff for the month as I've now purchased the cat litter, cat food, vitamins that were running low, etc. We have all the food to make the menu this week which will start tomorrow since DH & I had a late lunch today and it's rather hard to cook when you have NO running water in your kitchen b/c the plumber STILL has not shown up.
Total spent today: 76.22
Total spent to date: 133.89
Total left to spend: 266.11
Putting the ODD in goddess every day!

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
Had to buy a few things today, spent $3 at the farmer's market, and $14 at the grocery, for creamer, salad dressing, syrup, gum, and ricotta. Spent so far- $33. Budget $0. Money given to me today that I made at the garage sale- $15, put in food budget, so still need to make $18 to cover food costs. I'm trying to think outside the box, but it was delightful to buy a few fresh things today. Oldest dd said to me as I heaped up spinach, tomatoes, yellow squash, green onions, in the lasgana- we live like princesses, a prince, a king and queen, yes? I could only agree!

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
laenightleader, isn't it great how wonderful fresh produce makes us feel? DH and I feel the same as your DD when we're loading up fresh veggies and greens (was it as cute hearing her sayi this as I am imagining it was?). We do the veggie lasagna to stretch, too! Re: milk from other post. Organic milk is over $7/gallon here, too. Our current raw milk thingy is on hold, though we should be getting it back shortly, so we're stuck buying the organic. OUCH! It kills me that farmers have to pay to be certified to NOT put crap in their products...does that seem backwards to anyone but me? *sigh* Anyway, we found a great local dairy that does all-natural milk, though they won't get certified because it would kick their milk prices up $1-2/gallon. We can visit, etc, though, so we're likely going to start doing that when we can't do the raw. It's only marginally cheaper than store-bought organic, but at least it's local.

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
CSA charge came through for the month of July-$116.25. It's a 5 week month so more than normal. But that will be our produce and eggs for the month.
Total left to spend: $371.01
PS-The milk I buy is $5.99 too-well that's the lowest price. I buy organic 2% milk. Target has it cheapest at $5.99 (for the moment anyway). Otherwise it's $6.29 at Trader Joe's or $6.99 at Vons.

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
Went to save on foods, not a cheap place anymore for their specials bogo coupons and dollar deals. ham steaks, fish and chips, single serving shepards pie, boxes of taquitos, $1 deals canned tomatoes and cookies, plus couple of other things. saved $63.01 spent $76.70. would have come out equal but I bought some discounted frozen meals and dry milk.
$180.70 spent so far this month. need to go to safeway this morning for milk and creamo and romaine lettuce.

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
The organic 2% milk I buy is the Kroger Private Selection brand. It was 4.99/gallon last week, but the way things have been going, I'm sure it'll be over $5 soon!!

I buy a non-homogenised and hormone free milk that is supplied to the store by a local dairy farm. The organic milk is higher than this.

Re: Cooking and Shopping in July
I haven't done one of these threads before, but let's try it, if only to be more aware of things.
We budget $300-400 for food per month for the two of us. A lot more than I spent as a single person, but compromise and different calorie needs say this is reasonable. Let's say $400 because I've been sick and my partner is on a baking kick. (He's been reading the Joe Pastry blog....) We are starting to run low on some supplies, but we don't normally set up a special line item for that. Plus I'm getting ready for a trip in August and am trying to figure out if I can do carry-on only if I fly.
We haven't been shopping since the June 27th, so need to go buy bread etc. pretty soon here. We had a couple of people over on the fourth, so we made cornbread and black bean soup (and have been eating leftover soup). I'd like to find some more no- or low-cooking recipes but tend to avoid mayonnaise.
