Our minimum is 3 cf of water that we have to pay for .

Even with all my water saving techniques, we still use a bit above that.

If I could just get my family (Superman) to take shorter showers.

Me too! And here I was upset when our bill for 3 months was $171 because we had a running toilet for a few days...normally its around $75 for three months.

Yeep!   And I was upset when my water bill was almost $80 for 2 months.  Even at the height of the drought, it wasn't over $120 for 2 months... although that was a few years ago, and prices have gone up since then.

The minimum bill where I live is $52 for water/sewer/recycling fee.  I'm single, it runs more if I water the lawn.

Mandatory hook up? what the heck is all that about. Sounds like our local gas company. I just opened my bill for the month of July and found that we had somehow used $9 in gas for a furnace that is only used for heat and there were $14 in fees tacked onto that. $8.50 just for the privelidge of being a customer, too bad we rent now. DH shut the gas line off, thinking there must be a leak somewhere. Don't even get me started on our water bills. I just paid $183 for 2 months of water/sewer/garbage. That was low, it was alot worse before I made my daughter start using a shower timer limiting her to 5 minutes total. It's no wonder I don't feel like we can afford to live here.

We never use enough water to surpass the minimum charge in our area, not even when I pressure washed the house and fence this spring.  Our water/sewer bill is 23.00 a month, but it doesn't include trash service.  Unfortunately our water department is the only bill I cannot pay online or by phone. They only take payments in person or by mail.   I hate that.  Our trash service runs $54 per quarter and includes curbside recycling.
