    Re: Homeschooling NO LONGER illegal

    Melodique,

In Texas, h/s is considered a private school and the law states you have to teach 5 subjects.  It is a great state to h/s in.  I have 2  years before ds graduates.  I won't know what to do with my time when he is done.  This is all we have done for 21 years.  I sure am glad I have a 1 yo dgd.  I sure hope she likes to play school.

Mary, I know how you feel!  We just received our very last box of books as dd is a senior this year - I can't believe that our homeschooling years are nearly over!  When we began over 18 years ago, homeschooling three little ones loomed large over us and some days it seemed like we'd be doing this forever. But time does pass quickly and here we are...

Melodique, we're in Illinois and only have two h/sing rules - teach the core subjects and teach them in English.  We have no paperwork to file, no approval to seek, no one knocking at our door.  We are considered a private school here as well.  Our sister state, Missouri, is also easy to teach in and IIRC the parents file a curriculum plan each year but it's nothing burdensome.  Best of luck to you...Liz

    Re: Homeschooling illegal?

My kids are public schooled, however, my husband and I make a lot of effort to expose them to as much as we can. I was volunteer room mother for a Halloween party and I had different objects in paper  bags for the kids and their parents to stick their hands into and guess what it was. Some people did not know what a clove of garlic was, even after I took it out of the bag. Ditto for a kiwi fruit. I wouldn't want those folks homeschooling...I have had a lot of contact with homeschooled kids through my kid's violin class. Some have definitely benefited, others , not so much.  think if the motivation is to isolate your child from the rest of the world, or control their every move, this is very harmful . I do know several very well rounded, happy homeschoolled kids whose parents did it for the right reasons.
