    Walmart Fabric

Hi everyone. I live in Bergen Cunty, NJ. I love to sew. I was just getting really into it when Walmart decided to discontinue fabric. Whats more, Rag Shop is no longer with us.

I stocked up on Walmart's dollar fabric before they got rid of it. I am in the process of building a list of new sources of inexpensive quality fabric so that I do not run out. (If you want a copy of the list, I'll email it to you. Just let me know if you can accept an xl spreadsheet.)

Fortunately, I live close to NYC garment district so I can pop over when I want something special.

How are fellow sewers and crafters coping with this?

Yes it is a disappointment that W-M is dicontinuing its fabric departments across the nation. My small town has a fairly new supercenter that was built with no fabric dept. Many in our community protested this decision. Management said they couldn't do a thing about it. One manager even said she tried to reason with the higher-up's but they said they were discontinuing fabrics altogether. I have to travel out of town now to shop at  JoAnn's for material. B/c of gas prices, I seldom do. Local resale shops often have fabric rements. Sometimes I become real creative, taking apart curtains, or other items to use the fabric in sewing projects.

I live between two wallmart stores. One is 5 miles away, the other 15 miles away. The one that is 5 miles away is north, new and has no fabric department. The one that is 15 miles away is south and does have a fabric department. Initially W/M was going to get rid of the fabric department, but so many complained to the company that they decided to keep it. There isn't much of the dollar fabric I would buy at Walmart, but the two dollar fabric is pretty nice and more suitable for projects I would do. So, I prefer the one that is 15 miles away, not only for the fabric department, but also because they are cheaper and have more of the items I want. When the new store opened 1 1/2 years ago I told a manager then that I would keep shopping the south store because of the variety and better prices.

I live about 2 miles from a SuperWalmart that has a fabric department... no word on it going out. The only time I buy fabric is when it's $1/yd. Last purchas was for a no-sew curtain-type thing... spent $6.

Welcome - Colleensfabrics. I'd like to hear about your experiences of the NY garment district; I'm going to start another thread about that. Would you like to join me there?  Edey

Our local Wal-Mart had a person in the fabric dept. telling all the customers to call the headquarters to complain. We live in a semi-rural area with a lot of Amish and Mennonite women who sew and quilt. So far, we still have fabric.

I had no idea that Walmart is going to stop selling fabric!  We don;t have a fabric store here since Hancock went out. There is Hobby Lobby but their's is more expensive. I will have to go in there next time I am at the store and check it out. I have decided to use up the fabric I have in my stash before I buy more but maybe I will have to rethink this.

    Re: Walmart Fabric

Wal-mart announced that several months ago, but seems to have pulled back on that, as ours was supposed to close out that dept. in January, but didn't. Maybe they figured they needed all the business they could get and closing down that dept. wasn't a wise move. Edey
