    Poll: Food Stamps

Do you believe ... food Stamps use is an honorable way to take care of your family in times of economic hardship.

There's nothing wrong with them - that's what they're for.

    Re: Poll: Food Stamps

I most defintely agree with Pat.

However, what's frustrating for me living in NH as I'm single and have no children  is that I would only qualify for $10 to $15 a month.

Since I receive both Soc Sec and SSI and Medicaid/Medicare that's where it all comes into play.  In hindsight I would prefer having cash (SS/SSI) versus more in Food Stamps as a friend of mine owns a bakery, I help at a Farmers Market and my Mom lives here in town = asked to stay for meals and get some groceres from her.

I think I will still apply though next week as $10-15 can certainly help me.  I'll buy more milk and fresh produce and meat.

Matt go for it. If you can find good sales or couopns , you can stretch that $15 to buy more. Babs

    Re: Poll: Food Stamps

Thank you Deb and Babs for your encouragement :)

I am going to be running some errands on that side of town tomorrow and will pick up an application/set up an interview at the NH Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

I encountered an extremely sad situation today.  My friend hosted a BBQ in a lower income housing complex.  One of her neighbors who's she known for years (but had just moved in next door and gotten sole custody of three of his 4 children) said that his Food Stamps money hadn't come in and that he was embarrased and that he had literally nothing to feed his children.

I have never encountered this firsthand and tears welled up in my eyes.  Their clothes were mismatched and you could get that air that money was so tight but that he was truly trying. I was so happy to be able to share all my leftovers that I otherwise would have taken home. The smiles on his kids faces melted my heart.  Im going to have my Mom give them clothes and toys from when she goes through her house.  I'd much rather them go to people that would truly appreciate them then others looking to add to their own piles of "stuff".

I vow that from here on out that whenever I do have extra of things I will do my part to help others in need more than I do already.  This was truly a wake up call for me.

Matt, G'd truely used you to bless this family. I am wondering if they know about the food pantry or other soup kitchens. Maybe your friend or you could see if they have that information. If they have never been to get free food, maybe you could go with them the first time. Sounds like they need a lot of encouragement. I am sure that you will know what to do to help them and others in the future. Babs

Dear Matt, I agree with Babs that G-d called yo uto His purpose.

That family is probably eligible for Food Stamps themselves.  Giving them the contact info would be another gift from your soul.  Yours in Him, Deb

    Re: Poll: Food Stamps

Im not certain if he does know of the various food programs in our area but I will definitely tell him.  When he was still married to his wife they did okay financially and its because of various problems that he moved out with the children and is taking on a Mister Mom role full-time.

As I had worked for but continue to volunteer at various not for profits in the region I will compile a list of all the resources and help that is available.

Our local soup kitchen has it where you can volunteer to help serve the hot food and then they INSIST that you eat a meal yourself.  Perhaps this will be a good segway to get him comfortable.

I would defintley consider joining him in line while he gets his first free box as it is a little "scary and uncertain" when you do it the first time.  At the very least he'll have a familiar face to be there with him and a fun, "see's the glass as half full" kind of guy at his side.

Matt, if the children are under age 5, they may be able to get the WIC food too. Babs
