Some ideas for putting together a wind chime: Use the wire ring from a lamp shade or an embroidery hoop for the base, use fishing line to tie on the chimes. Chimes can be anything: silverware with a hole drilled in the end for the tie, or bent in such a way that it can be tied to the ring. Can lids with a nail hole for tying, copper pipes, sea shells, pieces of beach glass that has a loop super-glued to it. You can make a quieter version by using chop sticks, and tied in such a way to hit against each other. If you use something like a large plastic lid, and have it hang vertically below your chimes, it will catch the wind better and cause more motion. Take an old CD and tie it up such a way that it will hang horizontally in the middle and will then bang into the chimes, tying it to the same strand that is tied to the plastic lid. The movement of the plastic lid makes the CD hit the chimes.
I made a large bell shaped wind chime, using the metal bell shape from a desk lamp. The lamp wasn't any good any more, so I salvaged the head of the lamp, and using a large wood bead for the "banger" tied a long thin piece of cotton rope thru the top hole for hanging, and extended it down to where I wanted the wood bead to hit inside the bell, then the other end was tied to a clear plastic lid, which was like a rudder to catch the wind. It sounds real pretty when the wind blows, and even can be banged when you want to call the cows (or family) home!. LOL! Edey
