Food Processor do I need one, or is there something better?

Hi I am new here Big Smile, and have a question about buying a food processor for the first time. I have been relying on my  knife and my blender to cook,  but there are things I can't do     with only this, especially make Hummus,   and  finally grate things. any idea, suggestions? Should I buy something else instead of a food processor?  I don't want to waste $200 on something I will hardly use. Thanks in advance.

Well, maybe not.  Not the answer you were looking for is it, sorry.  ; )  For making hummus you can use your blender, much less expensive kitchen power tool. But to get the fine spread you want with this dish(depending again on how often you serve or eat it)you can also use a potato masher.  I have also seen it cooked to mush in the microwave and stove top, just keep adding a bit of liquid to the beans and nuking/cooking until they are soft enough to mash with a fork.

For grating you can use a box grater, very inexpensive and you can go at your own pace on large quantities.  That in itself may be a problem if you want to DO large quantities at one time.  Or have health issues.

So if you are interested in purchasing a food processor, you can check the local thrift store, borrow one from friend or family for big jobs or maybe you could save for one.  They are less expensive than $200, Walmart has a Hamilton Beach for about $50, if you are not going to use it often why put your hard earned money out for an expensive model.  And it is near Mother's Day, if you are not a mom or have a gift list if you are, this might be the time to pick up one on sale.
