Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
Hi jolenegreen and Welcome! To answer your question, yes, spinach is a cool weather crop. Others are lettuce, broccoli, onions, radishes, celery, carrots, leeks, peas, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts. Warm weather crops are beans, peppers, squash & pumpkins, tomatoes, eggplant, melons, cucumbers, corn. I'm not much of a fruit grower other than the blackberry brambles that are around (wild), and I have a small strawberry patch. Right now I have most of my cool weather stuff in. When frost is expected (like last night), or worse snow, I protect with straw, row covers, tarps, or milk jugs. Good luck with your garden!

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
I finally got myself together and prepared my garden plot. Over the last two days I dug out the old, dead grass and amended the soil with fresh dark compost. I am going the unfrugal way with some plants from the nursery and some seeds. I am hoping not to discourage myself by killing everything, I'm not sure I could bounce back as well as Brandy can! I have not done any gardening since I was a kid (and I guess my dad did all the work then too) and I want to have some produce from this garden, even if its only a tomato or two.
I've got corn, tomatoes, peas (sugar snap and snow), luttuce, watermelon, pumkin, cucumber, carrot and sunflower! Wish me luck
Oh, I forgot to mention, the raspberries, and grape plants are coming along nicely. And all the fruit trees (apple, lemon, plum, cherries and pears) that were here when we bought the house all have have the first crop developing! The cherries even have a blush on the already! I LOVE spring!

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
Moved my grrenhouse plants inside the shop last night so frost doesn't get them. It's supposed to be 28 degrees at night and low to mid 40's during the day until next Saturday!! We had to start the boiler back up. Hope spring comes back soon. All the trees have buds opening on them. Guess it'll be a poor cherry crop this year if the buds get froze.

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
I replanted lettuce from seed I'd saved last year and it sprung up almost overnight. Then I remembered that I'd forgotten to plant dill. It usually seeds itself, but I want to move it this year and use the area it's been in for... something else, haven't quite decided yet. My backyard looks like a patchwork quilt with little garden areas here and there.

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
Between the rain and the cooler-than-norm temps, we've lost everything but 4 tomato plants. We're going to try again with the micro tomatoes in pots that can be brought inside. And I hopefully will plant some carrots and radished tomorrow. Squash and okra will not be replanted until the last of May. Maybe by then the weather will be warm enough for them.

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
The weather has been hard on gardeners almost everywhere this year. I thought I missed planting some cool weather crops and would just do without, but I'm rethinking it. It was sunny here today, but never reached 60 degrees. I transplanted a lonely tomato into a larger pot today. I left them outside too long when it was hot and two of them fell over... not sure if they're going to come out of it or not. I'm going to plant corn tomorrow, no matter what. I can always replant if it gets too cold or wet for it.

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
Speaking of cool weather... The night of the 29th, we had 20s with frost, and it almost ruined my broccoli plants. They seem to be clinging to life, but just barely. And they were looking so good. After that frost I noticed on some of my peas, the lower leaves are turning yellow. I had protected everything with either straw or row covers, but maybe not good enough. As for the peas, it seemed strange, so I googled the symptoms. Maybe it's a disease, I don't know. They don't look that bad, but still, they don't look as good as before... If anyone has experience with peas and has this lower yellowing leaves, I'd like to know if it's normal, or at least if my peas will still grow and produce. The type is Burpee Maestro, and the packet said disease resistant.
My red lettuces and onions are doing great. Potatoes have sprouts now. Indoors, I've planted a bunch of zinnia types that are coming up and marigolds. All my other seedlings are still doing good, waiting to be planted.

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
It's been 40-50's during the day with rain for sometime now. My greenhouse is back outside of the shop, tightly covered at night. Hopefully weather will cooperate and we can till the garden one evening this week. Dh has a side job for all day Saturday and Sunday is Mothers Day so it can't get done then. (We are going to an old fashioned A&W drive in (where they serve you at your car kind) and then going to a beautiful nursery Crystal Gardens to look for hanging plants and odds and ends.) We usually try to plant corn and cool weather crops May 15th. Weather just has not been our friend for getting things done outside lately!

Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress
Well, I didn't get the corn planted after all. I decided to work in some more compost in the area, then the wind got bad again and I got tired, so I just quit! I probably won't get it done until next weekend. I'm going to do the three sisters and keep my fingers crossed that I can outwit the squirrels for the corn.
