    Garden and Seedlings Progress

This past weekend was not only a good weekend for spring cleaning, but working in the garden.  I'm so excited to finally be outside in the garden and transplanting some of my seedlings.  Saturday I transplanted lettuces, scallions and peas that were growing in my newspaper pots.  Potatoes are in, but no sprouts yet.  My tomatoes and peppers are coming along (in pots still).

For flower seedlings, I've got sweet allysum going, cosmos, blue bedder salvia, a hollyhock (others died).  I need to start zinnias and marigolds soon.  For herbs, my Italian parsley is doing good, and I have basil and sweet marjoram going too.

Where are you at with your garden, and and if you start seedlings, how are they coming along?

As usual, my enthusiasm outstrips my ability...I think I have succeeded at killing everything I planted.

I have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts planted.

Yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers and 1/2 the bush beans have sprouted inside

The bell peppers and the other 1/2 of the bush beans are doing nothing.  I think I will give them another week then plant again.

The sugar snap peas are ready to go in the ground.

    Oh I do!

The only things I have been successful with are ferns, gladiola, canna lilies and roses. Very helpful there, eh?

I've got beets and radishes coming up outside. I planted peas earlier but I think the squirrels dug them up. I have tomatoes and chamomile in newspaper pots inside, along with a few spinach plants that I need to get out. The spinach was old seed, so I took a chance just to see if they would grow. I tried lettuce, but it didn't come up. Strawberries, mint and chives are going strong already.

I just moved my seedlings outside to the greenhouse yesterday, from under the plant lights. It's warm enough overnight (43) so they sould do well. Hopefully it helps my electrci bill too.

We plant corn and cold weather crops May 15th here, the rest on May 31st.

I think I am going to try working with plants that have already begun. It's a more expensive approach than seeds but perhaps I'll fare better.

Got my broccoli and spinach plants in.  My seed onions are doing nicely, about 3" or so now.... I'm having to protect everything from the bunnies and my hens (scratching stuff up).  Got a roll of 3' high galvanized fencing and cut 2.5' pieces.  They are kind of like mini row "covers" and arch over the plants.   So far so good.

    Re: Garden and Seedlings Progress

I actually just got the chance yesterday to rotertill my garden. I still have to go over it a couple of times to loosen the soil up. Its still pretty packed. Last yr was the first time it was ever used for something like that. I am starting my seedlings this week sometime. I live in NY so we will still have quite a bit of frost comming. BUT I am going to try and plant cold weather crops a little early this yr. Can anyone help me out by giving me a list of cold weather crops? im not really sure...I think spinach is one right?

For my seedlings I am going to start brocccoli, brussel spouts, bell peppers, Jalepenos, zucchini, and squash. Maby some peas and beans as well. Im not too sure. As for other veggies I want to grow later in the yr...tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, spinach, onions, carrots and of course lettuce. I really want to preserve as much as I can this yr. My father is trying to get me to grow some potatoes as well....becasue he fears with all the food prices going sky high....trying to feed my kids will be hard.

Fruit? Does anyone live in NY? Im kinda curious about what kind of fruit I can grow and how long it will take to actually harvest? Anyone? I wonder if buying food at the farmers market will beat prices in the store? Im not sure how that will work out this year.....Thanks
