We're buying something needed--a "new" (i.e. new to us, used through a private seller) car for dear bf.  His has major back-end issues that would cost over $1,000 to fix and makes the car uninspectable and frankly unsafe.  We'd rather put that $1,000 towards a reasonably priced private sale car for him.  We already bought myself a "new" 2000 GMC Jimmy for $1,400 that I've been driving for the past few days and love.

Any extra will go to a chest freezer, and then in savings from there.

We owe more than our $1800 ($1200 for us with additonal $600 for two boys) in state and federal taxes. We are borrowing some from our parents to make up what we can't pay ourselves. So our rebate check will go to our parents to pay them back.

Not exactly the "economy stimulating" I wanted to do. I had hoped to pay off the rest of our credit card debt. What i really wanted was a tax refund, LOL. Last year, we got $2000 back and used it to buy new garage doors. This year, we owe $2000. Ugh.

I can definitely save this money ($300).  The public benefits agencies DO allow recipients to save government-issued funds.  I have to check at my bank to see whether there is a fee for savings below a cert ain figure.  If there is a fee, I'll investigate local credit unions.  (I suspect that I'll be going with a credit union.)  I won't receive my check until late May, but am certainly looking forward to receiving it!  Yours in Him, Deb

I am not quite understanding the rebate checks. On other blogs I hear for most people it is just an advance on their 2009 tax refund?  since I of course not getting one since I am in Canada :)

Its my understanding that it is an advance on the 2009 refunds, but I could be wrong.

We are using ours for 2 things. First to pay DS's tuition for his classes this summer (he only has 2, and we already have the books), and the rest to pay off a small credit card.

We are only getting $1300. $300 for DD..we will give that to her. She is 16, working hard to earn money for a new camera. She has saved around $1500 so far. The $1,000 for DH and I will go into saving for now. Then if something pops up , we will use it. DS works and files his own taxes so he will get the $600 himself. HOpefully, he will  use it wisely. We are using part of it to repair our AC unit.  Not sure what is wrong with it, but at the end of last summer it wasn't putting out cold air, cool air but not cool enough.  So, we have to have the heating & air guy come check it.  IF there is anything left after that it will go into our savings account.

    We can't decide!

    • We could finish off the debt or close to it.
    • We could buy some of the furniture we still need.
    • We could increase savings.
    • We could buy some of the other things we need...like stocking up for a full three months on food and supplies, buy school supplies, ect.

We will likely see where we are at that point to determine what is best.
