    Food Quality

I recently read that you should be careful about the food you buy at dollar stores, which would imply that they stock things that are past their "best before" dates. I have bought things from convenience stores in the past that were stale (I avoid convenience stores except when everything else is closed) but I haven't noticed anything like that in dollar stores in my neck of the woods.  They sell a lot of canned items along with things like apple sauce, cookies, cake mixes  cookies and pasta. Any comments?

    Re: Food Quality

I have never seen The Dollar General or Dollar Tree selling foods that were expired.

I do find some of the store brand foods are not as good as other brands. But this is true of any store and it's more a personal taste thing.

stale cookies is about it for dollar store stuff. some stuff you can see isn't as good quality.  like jam, you can see how much actual fruit is in it.

If it isn't a name brand product, it's probably not going to be as good. However, I do buy unsweetened apple sauce at Dollarama because it is good. What brand were the cookies?

I love Dollar General's brand of salad dressing and steak sauce. I won't use any other steak sauce, actually, this is the only one I like.

There are of course exceptions. I much prefer the store brand of iced tea mix over Lipton's. The only way to find out is to try it. Some are merely repackaged versions of the name brand. According to DW the store brand of mini wheats is not as good as Kelloggs. And I found that Bounty paper towels are much better quality than the store brand. All of Campbell's soups have wheat flour or a derivative in them, which I can't eat, and many of the store brands don't have it so I'll buy those. The same for store brand packaged rice vs. Uncle Bens.

One of my neighbor's sons works for Mobil Oil, and he says Wal-Mart's full synthetic motor oil (~$2.40/quart) is the exact same stuff as Mobil 1 (~$5.50/quart).

Does your store have Manning Cookie Shop? I haven't tried them but I believe they're made closer to home. I don't buy cookies as a rule but I'm going to do a taste test with family. I'll let you know the results.

not that I know of ...they don't really carry much food and it is limited to 3 shelves of beans etc. carriage house, allens and stokely beans is the only brand ones I can think of at the moment.

I've never had  a problem with expired food at a dollar store.  Or stale food, for that matter.  I've purchased some really good Danish and German-made jellies and preserves there...
