    Shopping Challenge: Freebies and Deals

Spring and summer often bring great sales, second hand finds and free treasures. Let's see how well we can do with finding great things for less money!

Re: Shopping Challenge: Freebies and Deals

We are doing well with good finds for our new house. My husband has been doing the best with this though.

    The Freebie List:

    • Lawn mower, my husband dumpster dived for this and has not looked at it yet
    • Weed eater- from my parents
    • TV and TV stand- my brother bought a new flat screen and these were shoved into the guest room, they were given to us
    • Glass top kitchen table- donated by one of my husband's techs
    • Coffee table- donated by the same tech
    • Bike - given to our youngest by another tech
    • Couch and recliner- My husband's Mother got new furniture and gave us her old ones
    • Country style table and chair set- my Sister-in-law had this in storage and brought it over for us to have a table large enough for us, the glass one is being moved to use as an unconventional desk for the home office

    Good Deals:

    • The fridge, washer and dryer my husband bought
    • Futon couch for $100, this has been moved to my son's room for him to use as a bed for now
    • Baskets- several baskets for around the house at no more than $2 each
    • Laptop, we knew we would need a new system this year. One of the techs had purchased a late model laptop from a friend. Apparently the guy could not repair the issues he started having with it and bought another new one. The tech couldn't work them out either and sold the laptop to my husband for the $200 he paid for it. It will do what my son needs for school work, the drawings he makes on the computer and his games.

I am on the hunt for more things we need and summer clothes now.

Wow you are doing great Brandy.  I often think lately that too bad we all didn't live closer together so we can swap and trade things with each other!

At least we can keep each other motivated to stay frugal.

Re: Shopping Challenge: Freebies and Deals

I find that I "save money" by simply staying out of stores. If I go in there I start finding things that "I didn't know I needed" until I saw them, so for me that works. YMMV.

When I do go in for something specific I try to focus only on that item and then get out before something else catches my eye. Several years ago I took a class in marketing and it was a bit of an eye-opener. Stores, especially the bigger ones, have people who spend their entire careers studying how to present things in the best light (often literally), the packaging, position on a shelf, or anything else that works. Next time you're in a clothing store for example, cast an analytical eye on the spotlights on the ceilings and walls, and how they're used to brighten the look of the higher-priced items.

In most department stores for example you have to walk around the jewelry and cosmetics displays to get anywhere else in the store because those items are often impulse purchases, and the reason in grocery stores that staples like milk and eggs are in the back. So I try to maintain a conscious awareness that the entire environment is designed to part my money from me, and to not be manipulated by that environment.

We're getting a free swing set!!

A good friend has a great, fancy swing set/play center that her kids have outgrown.  She offered to give it to us for our little ones!  I offered to buy it from her (it's really nice; I know it was expensive-they all are-and she could sell it on craigs list or something).  Anyway, she said no, she doesn't want us to buy it, just wants to give it to us!  Very excited, DS will love it.  It has a slide and a little house to play in plus a seesaw and swings plus she has a baby swing you can put on it so even DD will be able to use it too!  That's my freebie of the moment!

The bargain hunter has struck again. One of our dearest friends bought himself a new camera and has offered his replaced digital camera to my husband for $20.
