    Re: Frugal Gardening

Since Im the preachers wife, I will comment. If I really needed beer or wine or whatever, I probably would go buy it. We dont drink because of the possibility of offending someone. We use grape juice for Communion in church. Not because it is wrong to use wine but because we have a lot of former alcoholics in our church. It would be wrong to bring that temptation before them. Alcohol has to be an individual decision that is made with prayer, G'd will show you what is right for you as an individual. As your life changes, that choice may need to change too. Example: My friend recently married an exacoholic. She would go out and have one drink. Now she realizes that she cant do that. It wasnt an easy decision for her. But she could cause her DH to sin by her actions.  We need to all be careful about our actions and seek Him for our future. Babs

    babs:

I make beer bread too. It is one of our favorites and so easy to make, Babs

Hey Babs, I have been reading a lot of the great ideas all of you have had for frugal gardening. I was curious though, how one makes beer bread and if you would share the recipe? Thanks. Big Smile

3 cups  of self rising flour ( if using all purpose flour add 3 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt)

1 -12oz can of beer ( dark beer works better than lite beer)

    1/4 cup of sugar

Mix dry ingredients, add beer, pour in greased pan. Pour melted butter over dough.

Preheat oven.Cook one hour in 375* oven, cool 15 before removing from pan

If you make your container deep enough like tuna can..just bury them to the rim and use non alchololic beer.  The smell attracts them and the depth keeps them in.  Why waste good beer!    maybe some people needs reminding that gossiping and judging are sins too lol.   I understand not drinking around people with problems just the same as smoking when you live with someone who quit.

Going back to slugs - the beer definitely works, just make sure the lip of the can/pie sheet that's filled with beer is level with the dirt. Crushed egg shells cut slugs and kill them;  coffee grounds (that have been brewed and allowed to dry) deter slugs as they hate the caffeine, use the brewed coffee (cooled off) and spray in the area as well, plus coffee grounds are a great mulch; copper flashing around the area a plant will prevent slugs from getting near your plants, they will not cross over the flashing, something about a chemical in their slime (yum) creates an electric shock. Do not use salt, it's toxic to many beneficial insects and bacteria in the soil and do more harm to your plants. Can you tell I've had a slug problem? All of these helped but it's next to impossible to be rid of them completely, just keep up with the deterrents. Hope that helps! By the way, I just joined and there are lots of great ideas on here.

Thanks for your ideas! I added coffee grounds to the area earlier, not for slugs, but to help the soil. I would have used them before but I don't drink coffee and had to get someone to save their grounds for me. I've put crushed egg shells and also used diamataceous earth with some success. I think I'll try the beer in tuna cans set into the ground. Maybe using all the ideas will keep them down, anyway.

Welcome to the community, by the way!

If you have cats or dogs and they get a case of the fleas, spread diamataceous earth on your carpets, let it stand for about 20 minutes and vacuum just like you would a powdered "carpet freshner."

I don't have cats or dogs, but I'm sure that would work. Diatomaceous earth is cheap, too, and a little goes a long ways.  (MIsspelled the first time; that word is hard! LOL - I don't even pronounce it right until I stop and think about it.)
