I don't, but my grandmother started making her own soap about a year ago. I think she gets her supplies off the internet. She LOVES it.

In my opinion, I don't think it would save much money (I have been getting my soap for free lately from the pharmacies.... just have to know how to shop)......

but I can see the benefits in knowing what ingredients were used.

I do a melt and pour soap. I enjoy making it and I find it matches the price of Dove or Irish Spring typically. The benefit is that I am using a goat's milk soap base and I can scent it in different fragrances.

I make a melt and pour glycerin soap that is WONDERFUL for DH's excema.  I also make some that is scented for me, and for gifts.  The nieces and nephews love getting soap with little toys embedded in them!

The glycerin ones are good too. I use them for face and cleaning. It is cheaper to make those than buy.

Just by shopping the sales and using coupons!

For instance, recently Walgreens had several brand named soaps on sale, 2/$4. I had coupons and the store was also doing Register Rewards (like cash to use on your next visit), so in essence they paid me ot buy the soap!

I have never heard of Register Rewards.  I will have to look into that.  I don't normally get coupons for soap in my Sunday paper.  Lucky you.

    Re: home made soap

I enjoy making homemade soaps. Just don't do it very often. Maybe every 3 years.  I get an itch and just start pumping it out :)  Hubby is a butcher and gets me the fat for free.  I pay about $3 for a can of lye that makes 20 bars.  You can add honey, oatmeal, glycerin, etc.   I really got into it and now have a box of cool molds and fancy smells.  I bought the best molds at the Dollar Store, sets of 4 molds; seashell, turtle, crab, fish plus bucket and shovel for sand play- $1 each set!!!  I also use PVC pipe  for molds and just slice the soaps with a marble cheese slicer I got at a garage sale.  I started when I was raising goats and needed to use up the extra milk.  For me soap making is easier than making goat cheese :)

I really wanted to see someone make it before I tried.  There are some great sites out there now and good internet sites to refer to.  Homemade soap makes great gifts and can be a great part time business on the side if you find you really like it.
