    Solutions for a problematic zipper?

I did a websearch and came across this site when I was trying to find solutions to my zipper problem.  However, most zipper problems/solutions aren't what is wrong with my zipper.  Normally, when zippers do this it means that what you're wearing is too small, but that's the problem -- these pants aren't too small.  About the third time I wore these pants/jeans the zipper basically has no traction.  It just falls down like the material is being stretched and it just gives way.  Well, maybe I thought they were too small (there is room in these pants) and took to playing with the zipper after the jeans were freshly washed.  A barely there tug on the material around the zipper causes them to unzip.

Is there any quick fix for this or do I have to rip out the zipper and have it replaced?  I'd just return the jeans, but I've had them for a year and ... well, I look great in them.  I just need to figure out how to fix this zipper issue.  Anyone had this problem and know how to fix it?

     Help!

Metal zippers have a tiny little hook on the slide that when you fold down the tab it catches in place and stays closed. If the little hook breaks off it won't stay put.

On plastic zippers sometimes a tooth falls off or gets bent, and prevents it from closing. If you are good at sewing you can replace the zipper, but it isn't real easy to do it, in my opinion. I know this probably didn't help much. Edey

Hm.  I'm not sure these jeans ever had a tiny little hook on the zipper.  I'm honestly thinking I need to just replace the zipper ... and I'm so not good at sewing.  Dang it.  Thanks anyway!

If you don't want to replace the zipper, you can try replacing the zipper pull.  You can buy zipper repair kits (including pulls and other parts) at most fabric stores - I bought mine at Joann's.  If you don't want to pay for multiple spare parts (the kit was $11.99) you could buy a single zipper with a pull the size you need, and take the zipper apart to use that.  You open the bottom of the zipper - take out all the stitching until the two sides of the zipper are lying free.  Take the old zipper pull off and put on a new one, then sew the bottom of the zipper back together.  I'd try the zipper pull before you sew it back up.  If it works - great!  Sew the bottom of the zipper back together - there are instructions in the repair kit.  If not, you'd have had to take the bottom of the zipper out to replace it anyway.

I had a pair of jeans that were like that.  try spraying them with hairspray!  I just give em a little spritz near the top AFTER they're zipped up will generally hold all day (even with going to the bathroom).  you have to do it each time you wear em, but it's a heck of a lot easier than replacing the zipper!
