So is it based on your tax liability or your AGI?

Like I would even SPEND my tax rebate if I got one! It needs to help replenish my emergency fund.

    Michelle,

I believe the last rebate was based on tax liability with caps on income. I am not certain what they intend to do this time and as it seems, neither are they.

This is not a rebate, but an economic stimulus package. They are just using the tax returns as a means to see people get the money. Taxpayers are people who pay in federal out of their paychecks. It does not matter if you end up having to owe or get a refund. It is aimed at anyone making more than $3000 in the year. People on disability or social security is not eligable at the moment, the senate wants to add them into the package.. this is still in the debating period, so by the time we see it, it can be totally different.

Right now I'm taking a class where the instructor is an economist... Today he went around and asked people in class what they would spend their money on if/when they got it. Most of what they were talking about were things that were made in countries overseas. (TV, stereos, etc) I am not eligible for this in any shape or form at the moment (I only earned <$300 in 2007; and not on SSDI/SS) from what I can tell... we'll see.

"What I don't understand is why the government feels a tax rebate is the cure-all. "

Have any of you read the book :

The Creature from Jekyll Island? by G. Edward Griffin

It is a good book and it tells all about our Monetary system and how it was started and why and who it really benefits too.

I ordered it a few years ago from Amazon.com and just read it last year, it was real hard to get started on, for I don't like to read all about how things got started and all the info contained in most of these books, but this one was different and after I decided to read it, I really got into it too.

I was amazed at how and why the Federal Reserve System was started and how it works and who benefits the most from it all, well the RICH of course.

Why would they ever develope something that would only help out the poor and not themselves?

You may want to check it out of your local library, and see if you are as angry at the whole system as I am, after reading it.

...and may the Lord bless us, with all we need. AMEN

I really wish the government wouldn't do this.  It's just going to cause problems with filling out the tax returns next year.  Then I hear whispers about how it's not going to be just for taxpayers, but for EVERYONE.  Don't get me wrong, I think we should help people that need it, but if someone didn't pay taxes, they shouldn't get a TAX rebate.  Besides, what do they think our taxes are going for?  A lot of it goes for "programs" that are supposed to help people but strangely, there never seems to be enough money because the last politician that spouted rhetoric about "for the children" decided (s)he'd gut the program closest to hand when some pet project of his/hers needed money.

Instead of constantly trying to come up with a new program or incentive or plan to help us, how about reviewing the current budget and working with the money that is already coming in.  But they won't do that because then THEY won't be making millions like they think they should and they want to be able to vote themselves a raise at the drop of a hat.

If the rest of us handled our financial affairs like the government does, we would all be in abject poverty, living hand to mouth and we would probably still make too much to qualify for federal assistance.

I apologize for the vitriol, but I have just been inundated with stories of graft and corruption from the very people that were chosen (some by voters, some by already elected officials) to watch out for us.  It appears there's not an honest elected official out there.  We just continue to be lied to and ripped off.  It reminds me a lot of mopping the floor with dirty water and then when we empty the bucket and turn the faucet on to get more water, it comes out dirty, so we end up just swishing more dirty water on an already dirty floor.
