Has anyone ever tried Taxact? I read that it is cheaper than Turbotax but I am not sure that it would do all that I need.

We use a tax professional because we have several sources of income.  My husband has a regular job.  I am self employed and have a home business.  This can be a mess at tax time.

    Brandy-

With your income I think you might be able to Turbotax online for free- if I were you I'd try- I did my sister's a few years for free.

     Tracy,

I can't use the 1040 EZ forms which are the ones used for the free program. Frank and I are both considered self-employed. We need the forms for work expenses and self-employment taxes. I also want to use the program to start a file for projected taxes for 2008 so I can be sure we are on track for tax payments through the year. I realise this wouldn't be 100% accurate as tax laws and amounts change each year but I think it would help me to be close enough not to run into any shocking problems.

Brandy- maybe you can find someone in the know- an accountant- mama's job? to ask which is best- I trust turbotax, I don't know anything about Taxact.

Good luck.  Someone posted on here who works for tax prep, maybe they have an opinion?

I used Turbo Tax last year, but this year, I don't have the money for it.

I live in San Francisco and there are several programs for people who make under $40K to get their taxes done for free.  I found one at City College that I am going to on the 13th. Yay!

I really hope I get some mula back!

I've just done a quick preliminary run thru of our taxes and am in shock.  We knew we'd have to pay a penalty for the first part of retirement we took last year and had put that back, but we were not prepared for having to pay a penalty on my monthly checks for the next 12 years!  That bites!  And it's MY money anyway!
