Seeking opinions on Convecrion Oven -

Our appliances seem to be reaching their break-downs!
The microwave may need to be replaced and I am considering a convection oven.
My household is Double Income No Kids with work schedules that are not very conducive to cooking -
Though, if it really does take less time as advertised - I may consider trying to cook  

Thanks for any sharing of information or experience with this appliance.

 

Kdymott, I have a regular gas oven with a convection feature. I absolutely love it - wish we had it when the kids were small , as it takes a good twenty minutes off the cooking time of a typical meal.

In the townhouse we bought a reg electric oven/stove kenmore with the convention oven feature. The stove was on its last legs. It matter when only dh lived there since he didn't cook.   It was only about $50 more then the reg stove.  Didn't use it much though. Was a good feature when we sold the place.

I have a microwave/convection and it also will heat to temperature like a regular oven....I have one more microwave....I just have a glass topped cook top besides that....I use the microwave most of the time, and I use the convection to do my baking most of the time....once in a great while I use the oven temperature feature.... I love it.....I have a very small kitchen...

 We purchased a new Sears drop-in, electric range with convection oven about 18 months ago. We paid more to get the convection feature because it seemed like a good thing. The instructions tell you that it will cook about 20% faster then a regular oven. This means every time I cook something, I have look at the recipe to see who long the dish is supposed to be in the oven. Then, I have to calculate what 20% of that would be and subtract those minutes from the required time. To tell you the truth, I just got tired of having to do that and mostly use the oven on "standard." Plus, saving 9 minutes on a dish that requires 45 minutes doesn't seem to be that big a deal. But that's just my humble opinion.

With convection you need to learn to use it....so when I make up a recipe and use convection I write on the recipe how long it takes....next time it's easier....I use the feature on mine all the time now...

Thanks for taking time to tell me your experiences:  Here is what I have gathered -
I need to replace my over-the-range microwave.
The most frugal replacements are ~$300.00 (retail, not on sale).
An over-the-range microwave with Convection Option is ~$600.00

I can buy a counter-top convection model applicance for ~$100.00 - plus if I like it, and I move - I can take it with me!!!

Based on what I've read, I think I'll defer the $600.00, get the basic $300.00 microwave, and buy the counter top convection oven for trying it out.
