Re: Grain Grinders / Flour Mills

Thanks, markswife. I don't use my food processor much either - there's so many bits to clean that it really isn't worthwhile. I did use it to make scone (biscuit) dough the other day, and it worked surprisingly well (the dough was very elastic so I was worried they'd be tough, but they weren't) and I think it might be useful for batch cooking - I could make a batch of rubbed-in butter/flour mix to freeze for quick cookie/scone baking. I wanted one when I saw Jamie Oliver using it all the time!

However the grain mill is a separate issue really - I want to make fresh flour - and in some ways it might make more sense to buy a multipurpose machine rather than a purpose built grinder.

Linda, how do you find the Family Grain Mill to use? I quite like the idea of the hand/electric option.

I just purchased the Nutrimill grain mill and LOVE IT!! I've been looking at it for two years and finally broke down and bought it. I wish I had done it sooner. We are loving the flavor of freshly ground flour.

I also have a Nutrimill and would not ever consider any mill that is not electric. This one will mill 5 lbs of grain in 5 minutes and it is not overly messy.  However, you should wear ear protection when milling grain and this is true for any electric mill.  I also bought it from Pleasant Hill Grain Co.  I mix my bread dough in a Magic Mill mixer and it can knead enough dough to make 5/6 loaves at a time. This is how I do my weekly baking.  I've been baking bread from scratch this way for over 10 years.  My kids won't touch Wonder bread!

I am just refreshing this discussion since this is still on my list of things I'd like to do.

Did you notice the e-bay ad at the bottom of the page? It was grain for sale. Spooky how it does that. Edey
