Dear Martha My Family's Ingterests, As all on this Forum know, I live in teh old-fashioned world of books, & find maddening the undocumented form of too many websites ....

Anyhow, in hard copy is a great book called NOMADIC FURNITURE.  It concentrates on corrugated boxes, but finds uses for other matezrizals as well.

I looked on this site and have been curious about this for awhile.

What do people do with the fat drained out of the pan? (Hamburger fat, bacon grease, etc.) I know you can't really "recycle" this but just wondering what others do.

I just put it down the sink or garbage. I don't use fatty hamburger or other fatty meats so I don't have that much fat to deal with.

Dear Luvd_Lioness, What I do is use up paper towels, which isn't frugal, I certainly admit, but keeps the fat out of the sewage system.  I wait until the fat congeals, & then smoosh a paper towel all around the pan till I've gotten all the fat out.  I then throw the towel into the garbage.  I LOOK FORWARD to hearing better ideas ....  I know that some folks reuse the oil, but all that I have is canola oil (doesn't congeal), peanut or olive oil (these do congeal), nothing tasty as I know that hamburger fat is.

Sometimes I put it in an empty can if one is handy and let it solidify then put it in the trash. If there's not much in a pan, I put some dish soap in it and run a little water in it. The soap dissolves it before putting it down the drain. Putting grease undissolved down the drain isn't a good idea because it could plug up your pipes when the weather is cool, especially. Besides that, it has to go somewhere and could cause a problem in the sewer and beyond.

I reuse bacon grease to fry with or to flavor dishes. I don't eat bacon very often, so often don't have any bacon grease on hand. I save other pork fat to reuse, too, like that from chops or steaks or the (very occasional) ham. I sometimes cut up potatoes and carrots and toss in liquid pork fat, then drain and sprinkle with garlic salt and roast them in the oven.

Forgot to mention that if you save the hamburger grease (or almost any other grease), you can use it to make gravy.

I dont' like the taste of fat, bacon aside. I put very minimal amount of fat down the drain and run hot water. Reg grease gets washed away when we do dishes. Bacon grease, if it doesn't get used up in the dish I am cooking (like pergories/onions) I let solidify or put newspaper/paper towels on it to soak up the grease. Or if there is enough stuff in the garbage can to absorb it, I just pour it straight it.

though I must confess sometimes I just throw the whole cookie sheet away. I always use the same cookie sheet for oven fries, fish sticks etc, to save my others for cookies. I do wash it. Then it gets dark and scuffy. I cooked the chicken wings the other day on foil (didn't put enough overlap on it) on the cookie sheet and there was so much grease from the wings, went under the foil, just a big mess, tinfoil stuck to the cookies sheet etc so I just threw it outside for garbage. not worth hour of cleaning when I can go to sally ann and buy another for .50.  ugh I hate the smell of fat too.  You would think I would be skinny! but I like my sweets :)
