    Hi, Hi from South Texas

Hello everyone I am from South of San Antonio Texas. I live on a small pecan orchard farm with my two kids which I homeschool and my husband of almost 20yrs now.

I love being frugal, I have been most of my life, thanks to my wonderful mother who taught me the way, who also learned it from her mother from the depression years. We also raise many animals on our farms, chickens, goats, sheep, rabbits, just to name a few. We have been on the Dave Ramsey makeover plan for almost two years now as Janurary 2008 will be exactly two years. We have paid off $22,518.06 as of today, we have $7202.94 left before we are debt free and that is on our Holland Tractor and that baby will be ours!

I have a website and blog that I dedicate to Frugal living hence my nick name frugalcountrymom. I look forward to posting here in the future. I have always recieved the newsletter and love the search engine here on Dollar stretcher main website but didnt even know there was a forum till today :)

Welcome to the Community! I'll echo Luvd_Lioness: We're glad you found us.[ :)]

Do you sell pecans at the wholesale level or straight to the consumer?

We sell them directly to the consumer. I have a few days out of the pecan season where people will come in and pick their own pecans, the kids love this and they pay by the pound. On the slow years like this year where there is not much pecans I just pick/shell them myself at a higher price. Been working out so far and anything left over my sheep, goats and chickens get :)

That's cool. Sounds like the perfect home business! I remember picking pecans when I was a kid in Oklahoma. Wish they grew here, I'd still be picking them. Smile

Hey, Sam, glad to have you on the forum!  For fifteen years, I have purchased about 1000 pounds of in-shell pecans (cracked) to hand-shell and sell during the fall.  This year, we sold 650 pounds shelled; I believe this truly was the BEST crop I've ever sold!  We sell enough to recoup our initial investment, make our Christmas money, and give them as gifts.  I always give my married kids about 20 pounds shelled each to use in the coming year; they start calling me in September, "Mom, when are the pecans gonna be ready?"  HA!  The only difference between a GOOD cook and a GREAT cook is how many fresh Texas pecans does she have available!  HA!  Miss Paula in Texas

Hi Paula, I'm N of Waco about  50 or so miles.

Talking about pecans, how to do you stoe them? do you shell them or not shell them? As we have pecan trees in our back yrar, nothing like you do, but this we got a good crop of pecans, in the past yrs we did not... and I've been giving them away to friends, but would like to store some too, but was not sure of how to do it.

How do you  crack that many pecans? What do you use? LOL.... as the old method of doing it by hand would be hard to do that many pecans, but they do make nice gifts, don't they.
