    Re: Folk Medicine....

I've heard that vinegar, honey, and water is good for maintaining weight as well as losing weight. I wanted to lose some weight and tried first honey, vinegar, and water then just vinegar and water. After a few weeks, i didn't see any difference and gave up. How long did it take this woman to notice some weight loss?

I don't find the taste of vinegar particularly offensive, so have no trouble drinking it. My maternal grandmother, who never drank fluids at meals would sometimes drink a glass of vinegar and water if she ate something that gave her stomach trouble.

Lorrie, when you did the mediatation, was it a sort of visualization? That might be veering a bit off-topic from folk medicine, so if i need to start a new thread, please let me know.

Jewelweed for poison ivy is amazing! The irony is that jewelweed often grows right next to p.i. I don't always break out with p.i., and never got it as a kid. I did get a pretty good case of it after harvesting some zucchini. The little needles on the zuke leaves left little scratches up and down my arm, so when i cleared out a big patch of p.i., the vines brushed against my arms. I had gloves on but not a long-sleeved shirt. Lesson learned there...anyhow, that's how i discovered jewelweed. You can apply the leaves to skin, break the stem (it's a succulent) and let the liquid ooze from the stem onto your skin. I also made a poultice by putting some of the plant in some water and allowing it to steep. Draped the wilted plant across my arms and froze the water in ice cube trays.

    Lorrie,

Are you trying the cider vinegar and honey for anything in particular? A woman I know swears by  Dr, Bragg's cider vinegar for weight loss....she says  a tablespoon in a glass of water every morning helped her get back to a healthy weight. I treid it and it just made me dread mornings. : ) Meditation worked for me, but I suppose that's even weirder.

One way to bring down your blood pressure is using white vinegar to replace salt in alot of recipes like soups, dressings, main dishes, ect. Also drinking lots of water helps keep your body flushed out of salt. And green tea can bring down you blood pressure because its duretic due to the natrual caffine it has.Meaning it makes you tinkle more therefore reducing the systolic pressure on veins by reducing the total amount your body is retaing in liquids. My friend who is a nurse told me.The caffine in coffee though is bad for you and will raise your blood pressure.

I have sat at doctors offices and watched as drug reps came in and went to a closet where the doctor kept tons and tons of "free" samples they always try to get people to  try!Once they get you started the drug reps tell the doctors to get you on their pills and then the  doctors get a percentage or  cut back for getting you to buy  perscriptions.I used to be on breathing meds, high blood pressure meds, cholesterol meds, water pills, and " borderline" diabedetic Meds.I finally got fed up and said there has to be another way,I cut back on salt, sugar, fat.I eat way,way less fried food.I eat lots of yougurt, drinks plenty of water, lost 65 pounds, quit eating most desserts and white nbread and sleep more  regular. Now all of the previous  mentioned health issues have dissapeared,HUH! go figure,Remember doctors sre paid by thier paitents and as such we have  the right to demand they listen  and their is in most cases a alternative to pills.

    This is a fantastic thread!

One poster mentions that the blood pressure standards were changed to be low enough that they're very difficult to meet without medication. This same kind of thing happened with cholesterol. The number "250" was initially chosen, basically at random, to be "High" and require medication. It was decided that not enough people would fall at 250 or above to require medication, and the number was lowered. This is something covered at some of my nutritional workshops, and I finally  researched it myself. There's an actual government memo (available to the public, though I no longer can find the link) saying this. You'll note that packages of cholesterol medication contain the disclaimer that they haven't been shown to treat heart disease. The other interesting thing is that people on the medications have a higher overall death rate than those not on them in most studies, and equivalent in a few other studies, all other things being equal (there's several studies on this, just google).

    Anyway, a bit off topic.

My favorite "folk remedy"  is for yeast infections UTIs. I eat natural yogurt and cranberry juice at the first signs, and the minor symptoms go away within hours. If I miss it and actually contract one, which is rare, the same treatment works in about a day. As opposed to the three+ for the drug-store stuff for yeast that then gives me a UTI that I can't get rid of without antibiotics. I know a woman who swears by a clove of garlic for the same thing.

Also, for cancer sores I use alum to dry them out and spead healing. I got addicted to this stuff as a kid, and grew to love it's bitter taste :-) Some Indian spices have been shown to treat diabetes, just as their lore has said it did for hundreds of years. High dose fish oil has been shown to work as well as SSRIs for depression, which goes to show you that your mom spooning cod oil down your throat when you were little wasn't all in vain! Ginko biloba has been used for memory and circulatory issues for ages, and it's been shown to help both of those things. Willowbark tea for stomach upsets works well, and even better is licorice or sassafras tea (they are just harder for me to find, so I am going to try to make my own sassafrass tea this year).

I can't wait to read more responses to this thread. Great discussion, very interesting and informative!

My nutrition teacher said that eating a lot of leafy greens and other vegetables help to lower BP.  The potassium salt in veggies counteracts the sodium in the rest of the diet.

Hi, all ....haven't been on for awhile.  Just too much going on.  I'm so glad this thread is still going though.

I took a big step several days ago after I began to read Kevin Treadaux's book "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About"  Let's just say it's an eye opener to a trusting soul such as myself....hmmmm...I didn't realize just how trusting I was.

I took myself off my blood pressure meds and am working to bring my bp down naturally...wieght loss and leafy greens just to start.  I will be walking for an hour daily and keeping a food journal.

    I'll keep ya updated!
