This is a fantastic thread!
One poster mentions that the blood pressure standards were changed to be low enough that they're very difficult to meet without medication. This same kind of thing happened with cholesterol. The number "250" was initially chosen, basically at random, to be "High" and require medication. It was decided that not enough people would fall at 250 or above to require medication, and the number was lowered. This is something covered at some of my nutritional workshops, and I finally researched it myself. There's an actual government memo (available to the public, though I no longer can find the link) saying this. You'll note that packages of cholesterol medication contain the disclaimer that they haven't been shown to treat heart disease. The other interesting thing is that people on the medications have a higher overall death rate than those not on them in most studies, and equivalent in a few other studies, all other things being equal (there's several studies on this, just google).
Anyway, a bit off topic.
My favorite "folk remedy" is for yeast infections UTIs. I eat natural yogurt and cranberry juice at the first signs, and the minor symptoms go away within hours. If I miss it and actually contract one, which is rare, the same treatment works in about a day. As opposed to the three+ for the drug-store stuff for yeast that then gives me a UTI that I can't get rid of without antibiotics. I know a woman who swears by a clove of garlic for the same thing.
Also, for cancer sores I use alum to dry them out and spead healing. I got addicted to this stuff as a kid, and grew to love it's bitter taste :-) Some Indian spices have been shown to treat diabetes, just as their lore has said it did for hundreds of years. High dose fish oil has been shown to work as well as SSRIs for depression, which goes to show you that your mom spooning cod oil down your throat when you were little wasn't all in vain! Ginko biloba has been used for memory and circulatory issues for ages, and it's been shown to help both of those things. Willowbark tea for stomach upsets works well, and even better is licorice or sassafras tea (they are just harder for me to find, so I am going to try to make my own sassafrass tea this year).
I can't wait to read more responses to this thread. Great discussion, very interesting and informative!
