How to color hair at home....

If you know how.... please fill me in.  Is it hard? Would I need more another person to help me?  I don't want anything radical just covering my highlights... and trying to save some $$$$

My sisters in law do it all the time, they don't live close enough for me to ask.

    Thanks

    Carmina

My daughter does hers and my son's. And if you promise not to tell, my husband does mine. We started with just reading the directions and then following them. I'll ask my daughter if she finds any particular brand easier to use than another.

I use Clairol Nice N Easy. I'm prematurely gray, so it does a fabulous job of covering it up.

When I didn't have so much gray, I used L'Oreal Preference. I've always liked my hair lighter than my natural color (until now ... since it's gray LOL),

BTW, I get $5 coupons off two boxes of Nice N Easy fairly regularly, which I match with sales. I rarely pay more than $2.50 a box.

As far as directions, I do it myself, but I've been doing it for 10+ years. If you're nervous about complete coverage, get a girlfriend to help or your DH (yeah, right!). Like Brandy said, just read the directions. Do wear an old tee shirt though and grab your old towels. I have a "hair color shirt" I keep just for that purpose.

I have an old work t-shirt of my husband's that I use for that.

How long is your hair?  Mine is nearly to my waist and it takes 2 boxes for the initial job.  Short hair can be done yourself, but if you have long hair like mine, another set of eyes is critical!!!!!

Coloring your hair is very easy.  As long as you're not changing the color drastically, it should turn out beautiful.  My suggestion is to buy color that doesn't contain ammonia.  It's not smelly and I think it's easier on your hair.  If you can successfully shampoo your own hair, you shouldn't have a problem applying the color.  Just follow the directions on the box.  Good luck.  I hope your hair turns out the way you hope.

I used to color my hair at home, now I don't color.  It really is easy!  I like the Herbal Essence coloring myself...can normally get it in a 2 for 1 package (which is good, my hair's long & thick and takes two packages).  It'll give you intructions on doing a test patch the day before....make sure you do it. Other than that its pretty foolproof.  (Oh, and if you have a white bathroom and you're coloring it red, make sure you don't flip your head up to fast or you'll get red blotches on your wall from wet splatter off your head...trust me Embarrassed)

     A few more tips:

Nice and Easy with "Color Blend" covers gray perfectly and doesn't leave you with the shoe polish (one tone) look because it leaves some lighter , medium, and darker areas.

Any of the dyes will ruin your bathroom ( or kitchen) walls, carpet, etc. if it gets splashed.

I use my laundry sink in the basement to be safe, put up a mirror and everything.

Lastly, DON"T WASH YOUR HAIR for at least 2 days before coloring, color "takes" better on hair with some natural oil in it.

Good luck, you should do fine if you follow the directions.

I do color my hair at home and have somehow found a way to make it look natural; so when it grows out, it's not noticable. (Even the person who cuts my hair cant tell it was a bottle job!) I won't spend much on mine, average price is <$3. I always do mine right before showering, though I don't shampoo that time. Living alone (or if you can make yourself scarce for those 20 min) I just wear a towel. Short hair so so "flipping" for me.

just some more thoughts - I use the kind that washes out in 28 shampoos ( or really just starts to fade around that time) Natural instincts or something like that - it really is easy to do but after I did my daughters hair I realized it's wicked easier to color someone else's hair - can cover all the roots in the back, etc.

A hair stylist friend said that when my hair was short I should take the two parts that you mix together and use half of each, mix them in a separate bowl, and just reclose the containers the stuff comes in. This way they are still good to mix for a second coloring - kind of the opposite of needing two boxes for long hair. (once the ingredients are mixed you cannot save them). have fun! Pam
