I am, so sorry to confess this part, one of those people that has baby fine and thinner hair. Not bald yet, but who knows? Anyway, I just got it cut again, because I actually look much better with shorter hair. Add to that fact that I have a very long face and it has to be shorter. The last time I let my hair grow, because I didn't think I could afford to have it cut, I let it grow to 3 04 4 inches below my shoulders and just pulled it back a lot, but I am not a kid anymore and it just doesn't look good on me.  Sad isn't it?

I too have baby fine hair and when it was waist length I ALWAYS kept it pulled back.  I even put it up at night because it made me too HOT to sleep.  And I kept it long because it didn't cost anything to keep it that way.  But once I realized that I didn't really like my hair long it was easier to have it cut short.  That's what makes me happy and so I just plan on having the money every other month to pay for my trim.  And to tell you the truth, when I look at photos of myself with long hair it didn't look that good on me either! LOL.

Just like you 2, I have thinning & fine hair.  But I live in San Francisco, &, here with so many folks with body piercings of all manner, teh sight of a 55-year-old woman with a ponytail (still infinistesimal grey) is perfectly normal.  This is one advantage of living in such an "All heck breaks loose" town.

Ladies, I can't join the "going without a haircut for a year club", I will be frugual in other areas.  I work and need a nice short cut that is easy to style on a daily basis for me.  I go every 6 months to an expensive salon, that takes care of many of the Nashville Stars, but I use the beauty school to keep the basic style every 6-8 weeks.  This saves me lots of money for once the basic cut is there they have no trouble maintaining it.  If I couldn't do that then I'd just have to bite the bullet and pay what he charges.  The head and shoulders massage that you get at this salon, while they are washing your hair is worth the price of the haircut, it's pure heaven.  I don't spend a lot of money on myself, but this is one area that I would miss some meals for, in order to be able to pay the price for my haircut.

I have cut my own hair for the past several years. I have a natural bit of a wave so I get away with a bit of imperfection. I decided to start cutting my hair, after spending 2 days behind the bathroom mirror to cut back the strands that the "professional" had missed. After doing that, I thought, why just the small touch up? I took a really deep breath and a pair of scissors and never regretted it. Last weekend, I cut my hair again which took only 5 minutes to do. Here is a tip for the long haired ladies among us: brush all your hair to the top of your head and grab it in your fist. Then cut all the hair that is coming out of your hand. You will have a perfect "layered hair" haircut. I learned this from a professional. I think this makes your hair like chin length. But it has to be long enough to take it in one hand or this method won't work.

I've quit washing my hair daily, & am down to 2ce/week.  Not only do I save on water, shampoo, & conditioner, but my hair even looks better!

I nagged and teased my husband about letting me cut his own hair, but once he finally said "yes" he'd let me try to cut his hair, I lost my nerve. I know that if I do a poor job the first time, the next chance I'll have is in 30 years.

He has very curly hair. Any resources on how to cut curly guy's hair?

Re: The crowning glory of going without a haircut for a year!

This is an interesting thread to "ressurect". LOL.

Growing up, mom always cut our hair. My hair is dark brown, super fine and straight so there wasn't much to it.

In high school, I started getting my hair "professionally done". I kept it around shoulder length and with heavy highlights. I loved it! Not only did I look more natural as a light brown/blonde, but the "chemicals" in my hair made it seem thicker and it had more body.

I finally stopped dying my hair about 3 years ago (when I got pregnant for DD). It really wasn't b/c of the chemicals-during-pregnancy issue... I never went too extreme on how much I paid but I went about every other month at $70-100 a pop. I don't do much else "for myself" so I and hubby didn't mind the expense. I stopped more because I'd dyed it for so long that it was incredibly unhealthy by that point and I wanted to give my hair a chance to re-coperate. LOL. Since then, I've kept it very long (half way down my back; see my profile avatar). I prefer long hair on girls (God says it's our crown of glory LOL) but on me it just looks lifeless and dull. Not to mention (and I know this isn't a bad problem to have LOL), it makes me look like I'm 12!!!!

Perhaps it's due to the preggo hormones (LOL) but I've recently bee thinking about cutting a few inches off (still long but would take off some dead ends) and highlighting it again. I wouldn't go as extreme as I use to but thought that it would give me a confidence boost. Working in an office environment and especially at a university were I'm usually mistaken for another student, it's important that I dress in business casual and that I "stand out" as a staff member. I thought that giving my hair a boost would also help in that area.

But then I hate to go back to forking out that money every couple of months for a touch up. LOL.

    Have a blessed day,

    Julie

at times in my life, my hair has been short and chin length--NOT a good look for me especially when mom dyed it brown ( i guess she didnt like my green?) and then had it permed! ewwww

there have been other times in my life where my hair has been so long that i sat on it if it was down, and the ends of my 2 french braids would go down to my hip bones

every time ive been pregnant, my hair always gets cut at least 8-10 inches before the baby was born because i dont like babies pulling my hair

i kinda miss my long hair:( currently its just past my shoulders, with a wanna be wave/wanna be curl-but-doesnt-really-do-either, its almost easier to manage when its so long im sitting on it because then i just have nice waves and dont look like a fluffy headed poodle

Re: The crowning glory of going without a haircut for a year!

The longest I have gone without a haircut was six months when I was trying to grow it long in my early 20s. I wanted Jennifer Aniston "Friends" hair and was trying to get from above chin-length to shoulder length. It was a mess. I should have had someone at least trim the split ends. I have straight, thick hair and after several months, I had this frizzy bottom. My hair was like a triangle. The weight was pulling it down on top and the bottom was so damaged and frizzed, it just poofed. I either had to curl it and use lots of gel, hairspray, etc. or I just pulled it all back into a ponytail.

I have had short hair that needed a cut once a month. Budget buster. I now have a longer bob (below chin length) that I keep trimmed professionally every 6-8 weeks. I don't color my hair....yet. LOL. I pluck my stray grays at the moment.

I don't know if I could go for a year. It would require a different hairstyle. But it would be tempting to just wear a pony tail 24 hrs a day.
