Babs, My mom is in her late 60's. Dad passed away last year - fortunately she still has a good health plan. Many of her friends and neighbors are finding themselves in less fortunate circumstances,  having no choice but to continue working. Think it is difficult being either very young ..or an older woman.

Liz, Arrgghh is right..LOL. I have a 19 year old son, too. He is still eligible to be on our plan , but won't need it as he has landed a great job with a utility company. His older brother lacks...ummm...maturity. It is very easy for me to get worked up wth worry over this , too...guess we do all the worrying for them, since they don't care to do it themselves! : )

My sister's husband is a teacher- the union pays for health care for the retired teachers, and the cost out of paychecks is $1000 a month!  We have about $400, and then our out of pocket is about $400.  Luckily, hers covers almost everything 100%. My brother has insurance that is both cheap with little out of pocket- he has the best plan, but needs to work the most nights and weekends.

Re: Cutting the Cost of Healthcare

Our almost 20 year old son opted to move out on his own, and go to work full time instead of comit to college. Because of this he has no health insurance thru us. His job offers insurance but even though it is reasonable $100.00 per month, he only takes home about $1200.00 per month. Now that he has moved out he owes on a car and insurance, rent, utilities, gas to get to and from work, and food. There is no money left for health insurance. If he gets sick I know that my husband and I would help out. I am considering reimbursing him the $100.00 per month for health insurance if he buys it thru work. Thoughts?

If you can swing it, $100 a month sounds like a bargain to safeguard your son's health and set your mind at ease. There is always that niggling doubt about whether or not one is doing too much for one's adult offspring.....but, I recall reading somehwhere that, in today's economy, one can expect a grown child to need some form of financial assistance from parents until around 26 years of age. It is more complicated and expensive for younger people to get by these days.

That was my thought. I am more worried about the broken bones and catastrophic things that can happen than the little things like colds, flu and day to day illnesses. I think I will do it.

    Juardo,

If your son is working hard and still struggling to make it then I don't see a negative factor in your choosing to pay his insurance if that's something you can afford and want to do.

I would do the same for my kids. Maybe with some if you get a big raise or if you change jobs then I will not pay.......so he doesnt feel that he can depend on you to pay forever. Does that make sense? Babs

    Juardo,

If you have a 19 year old that recently moved out, you have to be saving at least $100 a month on junk food and utilities alone ( that's how I'd rationalize it, anyway: )

Re: Cutting the Cost of Healthcare

Last year my dd 29 yrs old had a tooth abcess.  She had insurance thru work but it would cost her $800 for copays for the root canel and crown.  She was going to have the tooth pulled but it was near the front and could be seen.  So I covered her copays - too many of my coworkers have teeth pulled because of the cost and now can't hardly eat because of lack of teeth.
