    Kosher is Healthier?

I am reading a book on natural health cures and eating better for your health. The author gives a list of things to avoid and mentions that kosher foods are healthier. I find that interesting and recall that Deb's methods for cleaning produce certainly went beyond mine.

Do you think kosher foods are beneficial for all?

Kosher meat/poultry is certainly more healthy as the slaughterer is trained to look for all kinds of diseases, whereas the FDA lets lots of animals w lesser-known diseases through.  I have never heard of a samonella recall on Kosher meat/poultry, for example.

All Kosher foods  -- especially those with milk ingredients -- are supervised in the process of manufacture.  Again, I have never heard of a recall ....

Kosher foods are more expensive, due to the costs of great hands-on work in supervision.  But, if one can afford them, there is certainly a high chance that they will not turn out to need to be recalled, & hence are healthier.  (Since I can afford them on Food Stamps, it MIGHT be possible for others to slowly switch to them.)

I once posted a list of Kosher symbols.  Does anyone want me to do this again?

It's not just dairy foods, but I forgot to say, also anything made with grapes, such as fruit in fruit juice for the most part, or wine, & so on, have to be very closely supervised ....

I understand the better pathogen prevention through supervision but what would make kosher healthier than a similar non-infected non-kosher product?

Yes, please do repost the list again.

I was reading more info on the slaughtering procedure and it does appear to be more humane for the animal and healthier for us too. I do like that. I'd like to take a look at other products that might be preferable kosher.

My husband and I are gradually changing the way we eat to a more natural and lower carb diet. It is overwhelming and expensive to jump into but with gradually replacing foods and slowly working on a food stock, it's something we feel can be managed.

I found this article while poking around for more info...Jewish Dietary Laws

The parts on slaughtering, draining blood and removing fat was interesting. I doubt I would find kosher meat around here but I find the methods far more appealing than what is easily available.

What a great  resource, Brandy!  With the links to the Star-K site, the article covers just about everything EXCEPT how to keep Kosher for Passover.

    Deb,

I read through several different parts. Some of it made quite a bit of sense and overall, it was interesting.

    Re: Kosher is Healthier?

I've kept kosher for most of my life and I don't think that it's so much that  the products are healthier (except for the meat and chicken) but the dietary laws which prohibit certain foods or combinations of foods and when you're able to eat them might be healthier in some way - for example not mixing meat and dairy and the need to wait several hours between eating them - that alone is much better for the digestion.  And at the time that the laws were written, because of the lack of food preservation keeping kosher was definitely healthier because of the foods that weren't permitted.

Also - except in a specifically labeled "meat" product - any food that says that it is Parve contains no animal products so it will be lower in fat.
