    Saving money on books

You would not believe what I'm getting from Paperbackswap.com. A $25 repair manual for our 7-year-old vehicle! Woohoo! I'm doing the happy dance!

I've added to my collection of my favorite authors as well as giving up some of my unloved books. What a great service. What comes around, goes around!

Thats great!  Our library has used books for sale daily for .10.  I have picked up a few each for both of my boys for christmas.  Santa always leaves a few books for reading and my total for 6 books for christmas presents was.60 cents!

try thrift stores, craigslist.org, booksalefinder.com, or cheapbooks.com to compare websites. Search more thoroughly on the internet if you're looking for a specific book. For example, a basic search on amazon will reveal the most recent edition (whose publisher is probably paying amazon commission for prominent display). If you're not concerned about edition or format, do an advanced search, and organize the search by price from lowest to highest. You can probably find a very good copy of any book you'd like for the minimum 0.01 + 3.99 shipping. on half.com, earlier editions of books are easier to find, though there's a higher minimum price of .75 cents. However paperbacks ship for 50 cents cheaper than amazon, and because it's a less used site, even the newer books that don't have any older editions are generally cheaper. Plus, if you want to order mulitple items, each additional item only costs 1.50 more in shipping on half.com, whereas on amazon it costs an additional $4 for every book no matter what. Expedited shipping on half.com is cheaper also-- $6 instead of amazon's $7. abebooks.com and Alibris.com--the books can be a little cheaper or more expensive than even amazon, but they could be great potentially if you need to order multiple items-- additional items can ship for as little as .49 cents more.

I use http://www.bookmooch.com.  I love it so very much.  For the cost of only mailing a book, i get a book!  I love the way it is set up and corresponds with Amazon.   I have gotten and given away many books with Book Mooch.  In addition if i find i have accumulated more points that i need, i can give them away to charity and those charities can order books for schools and such.

Our local library has a "friends of the library" building next door where they sell books really cheap. .50 for paperbacks 1.00 for hardbacks and 2.00 for hardbacks that are new. I try to just borrow from the library, but I do wonder over there now and then and find things that are keepers!

You can also get cheap books on Amazon (watch the buyer ratings and comments) and half.com - just watch the shipping charges; in some cases, they are more than the original price of the book - but in other cases, you can get some really good deals.

I was surprised to see that bookcloseouts.com has not been mentioned!  I buy from them all the time.  These are all new books.  Their promotions are always changing (month to month) and you can get some real deals from their "Scratch and Dent" section.  (This section is where I usually order my books from and have yet to receive any that are undesirable or that do not have dust jackets.  Some of their promotions are $1.00 book sales, audiobook sales and the like.  They even have autographed books at cost effective prices.    Their children's section is wonderful.   Shipping and handling is affordable too!

Thank you for the link! I hadn't heard of this one. I found something I wanted on the very first page, so it may not be very frugal for me. Wink It looks like a great place to find some Christmas gifts.
