Cute Halloween Costumes From the Dollar Store (and Thrift Store)

Since I am without my sewing machine and craft stuff, I had to be creative for halloween costumes and of course cheap.  This year I have to buy a costume rather than make one.  I came across a princess costume in the dollar store. Plain, but I do have some glitter glue left over from the kids art projects to finish it with.  I also found a princess crown  and wand that you put together yourself.  I got face paint and vampire teeth for my DS he wants to be a mummy-vampire. I managed to get a white sheet from the thrift store for his mummy banadages and we brought his Darth Vader cape with him.  I know we still have a few weeks, but I am slow with out my stuff.

When our son was little I made him a pirate costume from a pair of jean cutoffs, a blue and red striped pullover shirt an old clip on hoop earring, an eye patch made from black felt and elastic, and a red bandana. I also made him a dagger out of cardboard, colored the handle black, wrapped the blade in aluminum foil and used nail polish for a little blood on the tip. He looked really cute. This was when he was four or five.

Juardo, I have a 16 y/o that will love your ideas!  She works at the local ice cream store and their boss has asked them to dress up for Halloween.  She's really into pirates in general (and Johnny Depp in particular!) and was looking for some ideas - thanks for posting...Liz

That is so cute! I love making costumes. It's so much more creative than buying them from the store, and the outcome is better.

My DH did the same thing about 4 years back. He is allowed to dress up at work.

From the thrift shop: A pair of black chinos, two sizes too big; a ladies white frilly blouse, also too big; an ancient Egyptian print shirt (this was a size too small, but made into a vest); and a red sheet.

From around the house: costume makeup; the kids' pirate jewelry from Long John Silvers' kids meals; DS's wooden sword from the Renaissance Festival

    Total cost: $7

I cut the legs off the pants under the knee in a frayed pattern. The print shirt I made into a short vest - no sew, just cut and/or fray (you could also use something that is textured). The sheet was cut up for a long sash belt and headpiece. He wore the kids' plastic jewelry and carried DS's wooden sword. He looked awesome!
