Re: Homemade Laundry Powder - Total Cost/Year ~$30.00 (hopefully less!!)

In your instructions for mixing the laundry powder, when you say 11-14 oz of soap are you referring to its weight or its measurement in a cup?  I tried it by weight and I'm thinking maybe that's wrong.  I used it on a batch of towels and the grated soap didn't dissolve completely so I had to rewash it all in warmer water.  I used Ivory bar soap and nitially washed in cold water.  Or maybe the grated soap isn't finely grated enough?  I used a regular sized cheese grater.  How do you get the grated soap to be a finer texture.  It cleaned very well and had no odour at all- I loved it otherwise.

    Thanks,

    Penelope

I use one bar of Ivory bath soap (until I have enough soap scraps to not need a new bar). I grate it with the fine side of a box grater and do a quick whiz with the food processor too. I haven't had any problems with it not dissolving in the washer, and I only use cold water.

The only downside I've run into is I'm as allergic to the Ivory scent as I am to most other scents. So I hold my breath when I only the container my homemade detergent is in and don't breathe again until after the soap is in the washer.

Thanks, jillibean.  I guess I need to get a finer grater or get a food processor that I can dedicate to just this.  (Freecycle, here I come!)

No need to get a special food processor. Any soap remaining on it and the blades will dissolve when washed as normal.

Cool!  Thanks, Jill, I hadn't thought about that!  DUH!  IT'S SOAP!!  I have a small one that I never use and would fit on the shelf in the laundry room perfectly.  I'll give it a whirl! (Pun intended!)
