    Re: What we're dealing with

My DH is bipolar too. His whole family is and it affects them all differently. His mother usually winds up in a locked mental unit when she has a manic episode, because she's literally crazy as a loon. When her meds are working she's perfectly normal other than her mild dementia. DH isn't on meds, although he used to be. He does see a psychiatrist twice a year. Not many people know he is bipolar, mainly family and his closest friends. For the most part he's normal but can be quite intense and get upset about things that normally wouldn't bother anyone else. When he's like that I've found that if I stay calm and don't react he calms down quicker.

I love DH and his family anyway. Their bipolar disorders are irrelevant.

I hope you and your DH get resolution soon.

Oh, this is so difficult and unfair for you. Sad that he is so afraid that he would do that. Yes, bipolar carries a huge stigma, as do most mental illnesses. Is there an organization like Psychiatric Survivors in your state? They can help with this kind of thing. NAMI might also be able to provide support and perhaps advice, as many of them have been in the same boat with a family member.

I am praying that this comes to a just and swift resolution for you both.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but dd24 was just yesterday diagnosed bipolar.  If anyone has any helpful resources, websites, etc. for the parents and close family, I'd appreciate it...Liz.

Try checking with your counrty mental health department they usually have the names and numbers of those that are in support groups (I think NAMI) you can contact and go from there. There are several others on this board that either diectly have bipolar disorder or are affected by it through a close realitive having it that might be able to help you more. The biggest thing about bipolar is that they take their meds it really helps stablize their moods, both dh & dd#1 have it as long as they take their meds no problem if one of them misses 1 dose or 1 med everything becomes chaotic till they get to the drs and things get straightened out medically again.

Thanks, nan!  I'll add your recommendations to my list of things to check.  Looks like I'll be asking for more frugal ideas, too, after hearing the price of the meds, sheesh!  Liz.

    Re: What we're dealing with

I know about the price of meds dh is on a cocktail while dd#1 only takes 1 to control hers. DD#1's is $150pm wo insurance, $45pm at the pharmacy with insurance & $40 p3m through the inusrance. Dh takes 3 meds to control his bipolar disorder which was also misdiagnosed/mistreated for at least 10 yrs prior to getting a proper dagnosis. Without insurance we'd be paying $352 pm for his meds, with his insurance it would be $158pm for name brand or $62 pm for generic. Thankfully his insurance has a mail order service and the dd#1's meds are $40 for 3 mo while dh's are $60 for 3 mos which help a lot. I know both Deb and Dixie are bipolar maybe if you start a thread explaining you situation one of them can offer up some advice.

    Re: What we're dealing with

Yesterday was supposed to be the day the union met with hr to get a final answer on several situations including dh's but of course no word. He's been getting a little on the depressed side so I've been giving him jobs to do on the honey do list to keep him occupied. He has seen his psychologist who helped improve his mood it's all this hanging in limbo stuff that's getting to him right now. I'm hoping that we can go today without the work situation coming up in some form or another now watch while we're out on errands we'll run into several of the co-workers that he misses which will remind him of how much he misses work Sad.

I spoke with the school social worker that has been working with one of the dks in some form or another since ds#3 was a baby and showed her the report. She pointed out to me that if the college ingores his bipolar disorder and anexity around uniformed cops they are violating several laws that are put in place to protect the mentally ill.

I'm sorry if this sounds a little sterotypical and offends someone but the situation he's dealing with sounds almost like the Good o Boy's Justice System at work making the facts fit the case not the case fit the facts.
