Thinking of getting a pay as you go cell phone-need advice.

I am more interested in the pay as you go phones. I've never cared for cell phones. In fact I hate them. But as Winter comes along it will come handy when I'm stuck on the highway for over an hour and my employer or anyone would have no clue where I'm at. To me having a regular cell phone even at $25 a month is a waste of money waiting for the "what ifs" in life.

What pay as you go cell phones would anyone recommend or had experience with? I've read reviews but they all come out as saying they are all good. This is something that is going to be for very limitied use.

BTW, I'm only interested in using it as a phone. I'm not interested in additional crap like texting ect.

For the last 5 years that I was working,  I had a Nokia Trac Phone for the very purpose that you were talking about.  You can get the phone for about $10.  You buy a phone card that was 24.99 about 6 mts ago.  It lasts about 3 months.  Then when your time is gone, you just renew by getting another card or going online and renewing{if you dont let it run completely out] I worked from 1:30 pm til 12:00 am and it was so comforting to know that if i needed it , it was there.  I only used it for emergencies and I used it one time in those years for a busted brake line on car. The best part was if i didn't want to renew it, I wasnt signed in with a contract .  Am thinking about renewing mine as you never know when on the road if you will have an emergency.   The choice is mine, not a written contract.

I have an InPulse Verizon phone. I have one for peace of mind and because the nursing home has to be ablr to contact me 24/7 because of Mom.

Mine came with bells and whistles, but they have other phones.

Walmart is showing commercials for a pay as you go phone that they have.

I am limited to Verizon because it is the only one that doesn't break up where I live.

I've been using T-mobile.  They've had a deal where, if you buy a $100 card, the minutes are good for a year. The next year, when you buy a card of any denomination, those minutes, and your unused minutes are good for a year.

I use the Tracphone, too. It costs about $7.00 a month. Since I am alone and can't drive myelf out of here if the power goes off, it's a great safety measure. I also walk a lot alone, so I feel much safer with it along. I am really satisfied with it.

I've had a Tracfone for about two years now, and I like it.  I got my son one for emergencies too.  I buy a sixty minute card every three months for 19.99.  It was really easy to set up and works everywhere I need it to.  I only use mine for emergencies also, got it after I broke down on the way to work one morning and had to walk about a mile to a phone.

Another vote for T-Mobile.  DH and I used their pay as you go plan for over a year.  I'd gone into the store and the rep was actually really nice and told me it was much cheaper to get a T-Mobile phone and minutes package at the Target across the street, and if I brought it back over he'd activate it and everything.  He was so honest about it that's exactly what I did and we had no problems with the service ever.  When we stepped up to a regular cellphone service we went with T-Mobile and now we're in our second two year contract with them.
