Pat, We are also disciplined and paid off the "awards" card (almost) every month when we had it. Yes, that was past tense. I finally got off that merry-go-round and I don't recommend it to you either.
Here's what happens. You use the card for all your purchases in September. No problem. In October, the bill comes in. Your October income HAS to go to pay that bill off. You have no "wiggle-room" and no extra money so now you HAVE to use the credit card to buy all your October goods. We also found that we spent more money than we planned (since it was future money anyhow) and when a true emergency came up that we needed to use the credit card for, we could no longer pay it off the next month. We also had no way to stop this cycle. We get paid once a month, so budgeting is crucial and we have to have a plan that will last the whole month. Now that we don't do this, if I have the car tags to pay for this month, I can still pay the larger electric bill and also have enough for groceries - but I have the options open now to use the income as I wish - reallocating categories as I need to - and it's not tied up and paying for last month's purchases.
I just really did not like this plan. I will say that we do have a Walmart Discover card that is used (almost) exclusively for gas. I pay off the new balance of that each month - but the rewards we earn are not the point. Getting the 3 cents a gallon off the gas price is.
HTH,
Deana
