Last night was 2 large bone-in chicken breasts baked with 3small onions from our garden, with the rest of the red potatoes & russets that needed used. Served with more tomatoes that needed used up. For DH, dinner was a quick ham sandwich before he left to work the game. For me it was a cheese sandwich with some of the rolls from the freecycle bread drop.
The "bread drop" happens here because a wonderful woman is willing to accept, once every 2 weeks, all the bread products that will "expire" the next day from our local Macey's store. She places them on her front porch & notifies the local freecycle group with a post that says "Bread's here" & people come to get it. She was having enough left over, that she & I talked, & now she posts something along the lines of "Bread is here, will be gone by noon". That is my "cue" to go pick up the leftovers at noon. The bread is on the porch for at least 12 hours to allow everyone who wants some to have access to it. I usually keep a couple of bags of rolls, because DH is not supposed to eat gluten but does, & pass on the rest to my Relief Society President, who then takes it to the families that are out of work in our congregation. This woman gives it to me, because I make sure it does not go to waste, which is the mission of freecycle. When I pick up, it sort of changes rules a bit, since freecycle attaches no income or hardship guidelines, & when it comes to me, it moves over into the "who needs it" rather than "who wants it" zone. Today I picked up 8 paper grocery sacks full of bread products, & they were redistributed within a couple of hours. It is a tremendous help to those who need it, & I wish more stores would be like our Macey's is, & try to keep the "expired" food out of the landfills.
