Thrift in Japan - A big change frooom the citizens' previous luxury buys

Dear All, THe NY Times today has ann iintriuging article on Japanese people's makign do with cheaper alternatives -- like buying an umbrella to cut down on cab rides!  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/21/business/global/21yen.html?_r=1&emc=tnt&tntemail0=y  Yours in Him, Deb

Deb, I had no idea the Japenese culture embraced luxury items the way the article describes.  It's interesting to see how even other cultures are feeling the economy's effects and cutting back.  The part that intrigued me most was when the article pointed out that many Japanese have purchased luxury items over paying for rent and food!

When we traveled there a few years ago, one of our guides (a native of Japan who now lives in the U.S.) talked about what a consumer culture Japan had .. and how they went for the luxury items. Partly, she thought because things like homeowning are out of the average person's reach, so they turn to other things.

An interesting thing about Japan ... everyone hung out their laundry.  In the cities, you'd look up at the high rise apartment buildings, and many of them had laundy hanging out on the balconies!

We have had japanese students before and they marvle at the dryer. having warm clothes straight out of the dryer. even in houses no dryers.  funny since they have so many electronic gadgets.

I think it's probably a matter of space ...  from what I understand, homes and apartments are much smaller than what we're used to.
